Tips to maintain your electric bike

While conventional two-wheelers can harm the environment, electric motorbikes are a boon. The electric bike has already established its prominence in many states. According to recent research, the Indian EV two-wheeler market should reach ₹17.43 billion by 2024[1]. While people want to opt for the eco-friendly option, they worry about the insurance and maintenance of their two-wheelers. Comprehensive electric two-wheeler insurance enables you to protect and maintain your bike without worrying about the cost.

One of the main advantages of purchasing an EV 2-wheeler is that the money and time spent on maintenance are lower than conventional fuel bikes. The maintenance of conventional two-wheelers can often be a hassle as you need to regularly take care of the battery, oil, air filter, and other parts. However, the maintenance of a two-wheeler electric vehicle is easier.

If you’ve already purchased an EV two-wheeler or looking to purchase one but are worried about its maintenance, then here are some tips on how to maintain your electric bike with ease.

Tips on how to maintain your electric bike

    1. Schedule your electric bike cleaning

Clean your electric bike thoroughly every week. Keeping debris and dust away from the motor and battery ensures nothing interferes with its running. You can clean the e-bike yourself with a wet rag. Schedule your vehicle for a deep clean at least once a month to remove tough grime and build-up that could make your bike sluggish.

    1. Look after the battery

The battery is the heart of your electric two-wheeler, so you must take care of it properly. The battery powers the motor that propels the bike. Start by checking your manual to understand how to charge and look after the battery. Ensure the socket provides the correct electric output. A sudden fluctuation or spike could impact your battery and vehicle. Avoid draining the battery completely. When it drops below 20%, ensure you charge it quickly. Avoid leaving the vehicle charging for too long as you might overcharge the battery. Finally, keep the two-wheeler covered when parked to ensure water, rain and dust do not impact the battery.

    1. Lubricate all moving parts

Your electric bike contains several moving parts that rub against each other. These parts will wear out quickly without adequate lubrication, which can cause trouble in the future. You can use any spray with PTFE to lubricate the wheels and bearings. While lubricating the chain, avoid getting lubricant on your brake and its components. Ask a professional to show you how to complete the lubrication process before you try doing it yourself.

    1. Check the tyre pressure regularly

Electric bikes are lighter than their fuel-based counterparts, making it difficult to gauge the tyre pressure. Develop a habit of checking the pressure before you take the bike for a ride. Riding a bike with low tyre pressure can cause long-term damage to the vehicle. Two-wheelers with low tyre pressure are more likely to skid, which could harm you and damage the two-wheeler.

    1. Replace the brake pads

Most electric bikes have disc brake systems. Moderate wear and tear of the pads can greatly impact your ability to stop. Examine the brakes regularly and replace the pads whenever you notice some wear and tear. Get your vehicle examined thoroughly and the brakes fixed immediately when the friction material moves out of place.

    1. Keep the weight off

Overloading your electric bike could put additional pressure on the tyres, forcing the motor to work harder than it should. If you ride the two-wheeler regularly, avoid piling on too much luggage or taking on too many passengers. The additional weight will overwork the motor and reduce the bike’s performance.

    1. Turn it off

Never leave your electric bike running while idle. Always switch it off when you're waiting. You can even turn the bike off at a signal to conserve the battery. You can shut down the vehicle if you will not use it for a while or when travelling. These small steps help conserve power and keep your bike running for longer.

Learning to take care of your electric bike should not feel overwhelming. Along with these tips, you must purchase a motor insurance policy to protect your vehicle. As per law, all e-bikes in India must have at least third-party coverage. You can select a comprehensive plan to protect your wallet and two-wheeler against damages after an accident. Crucially, when you opt for an electric vehicle, you do your part for the environment.

Once you purchase insurance, you must renew the plan each year to stay on the right side of the law and enjoy uninterrupted coverage. At Zuno, we made the renewal process quick, easy and transparent. Enter your policy number and pay the premium to complete the motor insurance renewal process in a few easy steps.
