Traffic Fines in India: MV Act Penalties (2026)

Traffic fine amounts in India under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 as amended by the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019, in force since 1 September 2019. The amendment raised penalties across the board – driving without insurance to Rs 2,000, drink driving to Rs 10,000, driving without a valid PUC certificate to Rs 10,000 and offences by juvenile drivers to Rs 25,000 with registration cancellation. Each guide below states the governing section, the penalty, what the offence covers and how it interacts with your motor insurance policy.

All 16 offences

Why penalties rose in 2019

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 increased penalties across the Act, in several cases tenfold, alongside provisions for electronic enforcement and a national road-safety board. States notify their own compounding amounts within that framework, so the amount collected at the roadside can differ from the central maximum. Repeat offences carry higher penalties, and several offences additionally carry licence disqualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the highest traffic fine in India?

Offences involving a juvenile driver carry Rs 25,000, up to three years imprisonment for the guardian, and cancellation of the vehicle registration for twelve months – the heaviest routine penalty in the amended Act.

When did the higher fines take effect?

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 came into force on 1 September 2019.

Are fine amounts the same in every state?

No. The central Act sets the framework and maximums; states notify compounding amounts, so collected figures vary between states.

Does paying a fine affect my insurance premium?

Not directly – Indian motor pricing does not load premiums for traffic violations. On usage-based policies, the underlying behaviour such as speeding or phone use can lower a Driving Score and reduce the renewal discount.
