Senior Citizen Driving Licence Rules India (2026)

Driving past 60 in India? You can, and you do not need a special senior citizen driving licence. What you do need is a clear understanding of the renewal slabs that kick in at age 40, 50, and 60, plus the Form 1A medical certificate that is mandatory from 40 onwards. As of 2026, the Sarathi Parivahan portal makes senior renewal almost fully online. Here is what changes with age, and what stays the same.

Does Age Matter for DL in India?

India has no fixed upper age for holding a driving licence. You can legally drive as long as you pass the medical fitness test. The Motor Vehicles Act 1988 only changes the renewal frequency as you age, to ensure regular health checks.

  • Up to 40: single renewal cycle of 20 years from issue
  • 40 to 50: renewal every 10 years
  • 50 to 60: renewal every 5 years
  • 60 and above: renewal every 3 years
  • Form 1A medical: mandatory at every renewal from age 40 onwards

Medical Fitness Requirements

From the day you turn 40, every licence renewal needs a Form 1A medical certificate from a registered MBBS doctor. The checks become more detailed as you age.

  • Form 1A medical: signed by MBBS doctor; valid for 6 months from issue
  • Eyesight: 6/6 corrected vision in each eye with or without spectacles
  • Colour vision: Ishihara plate test (mandatory for transport, optional for non-transport)
  • Hearing: basic conversational hearing both ears
  • Blood pressure: BP measurement; uncontrolled hypertension may need conditional licence
  • Diabetes: disclosure required; insulin-dependent diabetes needs conditional approval
  • Heart and brain conditions: disclosure of any heart attack, stroke, or epilepsy history
  • Above 60: additional cognitive check at some RTOs to verify reflexes

How to Renew as a Senior

  1. Schedule Form 1A medical: Visit a registered MBBS doctor at a Government-listed clinic. Pay approximately Rs 200 to Rs 500 in clinic fee.
  2. Open Sarathi Parivahan: Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and pick your state.
  3. Click Services on DL: Enter DL number and DOB.
  4. Pick Renewal of DL: Select Renewal of Driving Licence from the service list.
  5. Verify Aadhaar e-KYC: Pre-fill personal details from Aadhaar database.
  6. Upload Form 1A medical: Scanned copy of fresh certificate.
  7. Pay renewal fee: Approximately Rs 400 to Rs 600 via UPI or net banking.
  8. Visit RTO if asked: Some states ask for biometric refresh, fresh photo, and eyesight test at the counter.
  9. Collect smart card: Renewed card with new validity dispatched in 7 to 30 days.

Eyesight and Hearing

The single most common reason senior renewals are delayed is eyesight. A simple Ishihara plate test and Snellen chart reading are done at most RTOs and listed MBBS clinics.

  • 6/6 vision: with or without spectacles; you may wear lenses or glasses during the test
  • Cataract surgery: done before renewal if vision is below 6/6
  • Hearing aids: allowed during test; declare them in Form 1A
  • Macular degeneration: may need a conditional licence with daytime-only restriction in some states
  • Glaucoma: disclose, and submit ophthalmologist note

Documents for Senior Renewal

  • Existing driving licence: smart card scanned (front and back)
  • Form 1A medical certificate: signed by registered MBBS doctor, dated within 6 months
  • Aadhaar card: for e-KYC verification
  • Address proof: only if address has changed
  • Three passport-size photographs: recent, white background
  • Eyesight test report: included in Form 1A or separate ophthalmologist note
  • Disclosure form: for any chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease

Upper Age and Discontinuation

India does not have a fixed upper age for non-transport licences. You can drive at 70, 80, or beyond, provided you pass the medical fitness test at every 3-year renewal.

  • Non-transport (private): no upper age cap; renew every 3 years
  • Transport (commercial): many states do not issue fresh transport licences after 55 or 60
  • Conditional licence: RTOs may issue with restrictions like 'no night driving' or 'limit speed to 60 km/h'
  • Voluntary surrender: you can surrender your DL on Sarathi if you stop driving; this stops renewal reminders
  • Family-led discussion: many senior drivers reduce driving voluntarily based on family input; this is a personal choice, not a legal requirement

Senior Drivers and Insurance

Senior Drivers and Insurance Premium

Most motor insurance providers in India offer the same private-car premium across age groups for drivers up to 70. Above 70, some providers may price the policy slightly higher or ask for fresh Form 1A. Maintain your no-claim bonus, drive sensibly, and senior years stay financially manageable. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the driving licence rules for senior citizens in India?
There is no fixed upper age for holding a driving licence in India. Renewal frequency shortens with age: every 10 years from 40 to 50, every 5 years from 50 to 60, and every 3 years above 60. Form 1A medical certificate is mandatory at every renewal from age 40 onwards.
How often must I renew my driving licence after 60?
Every 3 years if you are above 60 years. You must submit a fresh Form 1A medical certificate from a registered MBBS doctor at each renewal. The renewal fee is approximately Rs 400 to Rs 600.
Is there an upper age limit for driving in India?
No fixed upper age for non-transport (private) licences. You can hold a DL at 70, 80, or beyond, provided you pass the Form 1A medical fitness check at each 3-year renewal. Transport licences are typically not issued fresh after age 55 or 60.
What is Form 1A medical certificate?
Form 1A is the medical fitness certificate under Central Motor Vehicles Rules, signed by a registered MBBS doctor. It covers eyesight, hearing, BP, diabetes, and chronic conditions. Mandatory for transport licences at every issue and for non-transport at age 40 and above renewals.
Can I drive in India after age 70?
Yes, provided you pass Form 1A medical at each 3-year renewal. Some RTOs add a cognitive check above 70 to verify reflexes. Most non-transport drivers in their 70s continue to drive without issue. Above 80, some states issue conditional licences with daytime-only or speed restrictions.
How much does senior driving licence renewal cost?
As of 2026, the standard renewal fee is approximately Rs 400 to Rs 600 (Rs 200 fee plus Rs 200 smart card plus state add-ons). Form 1A medical at a private clinic adds approximately Rs 200 to Rs 500. Total spend is approximately Rs 600 to Rs 1,100.
What happens if I cannot pass the eyesight test?
If your vision is below 6/6 corrected, the RTO may ask for ophthalmologist treatment (cataract surgery, lens prescription) and re-submission of Form 1A. Some states issue conditional licences with restrictions like daytime-only driving or maximum 60 km/h speed.
Does motor insurance cost more for senior drivers?
Most providers in India charge the same private-car premium up to age 70. Above 70, some providers may price slightly higher or ask for fresh Form 1A. Maintaining a clean no-claim bonus keeps premium manageable across all age groups.
