Check Driving Licence Status Online (Parivahan) 2026
Where to Check Status
Five official channels carry live driving licence status data:
- Sarathi Parivahan: sarathi.parivahan.gov.in; primary application portal with detailed step-by-step status
- Parivahan main portal: parivahan.gov.in; central licence and RC verification
- mParivahan app: Android and iOS app from Ministry of Road Transport
- DigiLocker app: once licence is issued, the digital copy lands here
- State RTO portal: most states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi) have their own portals linking back to Sarathi
Check by Application Number
The fastest way to track status is by your application number. This is the 12 to 16-digit number you got when filing the LL or DL form.
- Open Sarathi Parivahan: Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in.
- Pick your state: Click on your state in the drop-down on the home page.
- Click Application Status: From the home page, click on Application Status tile or visit the Application Status section under Driver Licence Related Services.
- Enter Application Number: Type the 12 to 16-digit application reference number from your receipt.
- Enter Date of Birth: Type your DOB in DD/MM/YYYY format.
- Submit: Click Submit. The current stage of your application appears with date stamps for each stage cleared.
Check by Mobile or DOB
If you have lost your application number, Sarathi has a Find Application Number feature:
- Visit Sarathi Parivahan: Click on Driver Licence Related Services.
- Click Find Application Number: On the lower part of the page.
- Enter name, DOB, and mobile: Add the details you used while applying.
- Submit and receive number: The system displays your application number.
- Use it in the status portal: Use this number to check status as above.
Check on DigiLocker
Once your permanent driving licence is issued, the digital copy is auto-pushed to DigiLocker. This is the easiest way to confirm issue.
- Download DigiLocker app: Available on Google Play and App Store
- Sign up with Aadhaar: Use mobile linked to Aadhaar for OTP
- Search Driving Licence: Under Issued Documents or Search Documents tab
- Pull from Ministry of Road Transport: Confirm your name and DL number
- Save the digital copy: Use offline at any traffic stop or claim
Status Stages Explained
Your application moves through 6 to 8 stages on Sarathi. Each stage has a status code:
| Stage | What It Means | Typical Time |
|---|---|---|
| Application Created | Your form is filed and pending review | 0 to 1 day |
| Fees Paid | Payment confirmed by Bharat Kosh gateway | 1 to 2 hours |
| Document Verified | RTO clerk has checked uploads | 2 to 5 days |
| Test Scheduled | Slot booked for LL test or driving test | 5 to 15 days |
| Test Passed / Failed | Test outcome recorded | Same day |
| Approved | RTO officer has approved licence issue | 2 to 7 days |
| Smart Card Printed | Card sent to printing vendor | 3 to 10 days |
| Dispatched | Smart card handed to India Post or courier | 5 to 14 days delivery |
Smart Card Dispatch Tracking
Once your status shows Dispatched, the smart card moves through speed post or registered post. Track separately on the India Post site:
- Speed post tracking: visit indiapost.gov.in or use the India Post mobile app with the consignment number
- Consignment number: visible on the dispatch entry in Sarathi status
- SMS alerts: most states send dispatch SMS to your registered mobile
- Delivery time: 5 to 14 days for India Post within the same state, 7 to 21 days across states
Common Status Issues
If status seems stuck or shows odd codes, these are the usual reasons:
- Status not updating: RTO clerk may be on leave; wait 3 to 5 working days
- Document Rejected: usually due to blurry uploads, name mismatch, or expired address proof; re-upload via Sarathi
- Test Pending: slot was booked but test was missed; book a fresh slot and pay re-test fee
- Smart Card Not Dispatched: printing vendor may be in queue; can take 3 to 4 weeks in peak periods
- Returned to Sender: postal delivery failed; collect from local post office within 7 days or apply for re-dispatch
What Pending Means
Pending statuses are common during the first 7 to 14 days. They do not mean rejection. Read them carefully:
- Document Pending: RTO clerk is yet to open your file; wait 3 to 5 days
- Verification Pending: clerk has opened the file but needs to cross-check Aadhaar e-KYC
- Approval Pending: RTO officer is yet to sign off; usually completed in 2 to 5 days
- Print Pending: smart card has been approved and is in print queue
- Dispatch Pending: printed but not yet handed to post office
Status Check and Insurance
If you have just bought a new car and are waiting for the smart card, the digital licence on DigiLocker is fully valid for buying motor insurance and for claim purposes. You do not have to wait for the physical card. The day you see Approved on Sarathi, you can buy car insurance online using the digital DL. The smart card follows by post in the next 2 to 3 weeks.
