What's Inside

What Is MG Comet EV Car Insurance?

MG Comet EV car insurance is a motor insurance policy designed for India's smallest and most affordable electric car. It covers your 2-door, 4-seater micro EV against accidents, theft, natural disasters, and third-party liabilities, with added protection for the electric drivetrain and battery pack.

Unlike traditional car insurance, EV insurance for the Comet does not cover any engine, gearbox, or exhaust components. Because the car has none. Instead, it focuses on the electric motor (42 PS / 110 Nm), the 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the charging port, and the regenerative braking system.

The MG Comet EV is a unique vehicle in the Indian market. At just 3.4 metres long, it is shorter than most hatchbacks and even some motorcycles parked end-to-end. This compact size means smaller body panels, fewer parts, and lower repair costs for most non-battery claims. However, the battery pack remains the most valuable single component in the car, making battery-focused insurance cover essential.

Key things to know about Comet EV insurance:

  • Flat TP premium: IRDAI sets a flat third-party rate of ~Rs 2,466/yr for EVs priced under Rs 30 lakh, far lower than equivalent petrol cars in the same price bracket
  • Battery pack replacement cost: Rs 1.5–2.5 lakh. This is affordable compared to other EVs, but still a significant portion (35–40%) of the Comet's total value
  • No engine or gearbox: The Comet EV uses a single electric motor with direct drive, fewer moving parts means fewer mechanical claims and simpler repair processes
  • Compact body panels: At just 3.4 metres long, replacement panels are smaller and cheaper than standard hatchbacks, keeping body repair claims affordable
  • Connected car features: The i-SMART app offers real-time vehicle tracking, geo-fencing, and remote diagnostics, useful for theft recovery and claim documentation
  • Lowest EV insurance cost in India: With an ex-showroom price from Rs 6.99 lakh, the Comet EV has the lowest IDV among all EVs, making it the cheapest electric car to insure
  • 10.25" touchscreen infotainment: Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with connected features, covered under comprehensive insurance as an in-built accessory

Why MG Comet EV Insurance Is Important

Even though the Comet EV is the most affordable EV in India, its repair costs can still be significant, especially the battery pack. A single battery replacement can cost nearly half the car's ex-showroom price. That is why proper insurance is essential, even on a budget-friendly micro EV.

The Comet EV is designed purely for city use. It spends its life in bumper-to-bumper traffic, narrow lanes, and tight parking spots. While its compact size helps avoid many accidents, the sheer frequency of city driving exposes it to minor bumps, scrapes, and low-speed impacts. Even small claims add up over time without proper insurance.

MG Comet EV Estimated Repair Costs

Component Estimated Cost
Battery pack (full replacement) Rs 1,50,000 – Rs 2,50,000
Electric motor Rs 40,000 – Rs 70,000
10.25" touchscreen infotainment Rs 10,000 – Rs 18,000
LED headlamp assembly Rs 6,000 – Rs 10,000
Front bumper + body panel Rs 5,000 – Rs 10,000
Charging port + cable assembly Rs 5,000 – Rs 10,000

As you can see, the battery pack alone costs more than 2 years of comprehensive insurance premium. The electric motor replacement is nearly 10 times the annual premium. Even the touchscreen costs more than a full year of coverage. The math clearly favours comprehensive insurance.

Key Facts for Comet EV Owners
  • Battery warranty: 8 years / 1.6 lakh km, covers manufacturing defects and capacity degradation, but not accidental damage from collisions, floods, or short circuits
  • Most affordable EV to insure: Lowest IDV among all EVs in India = lowest own-damage premium in the electric car segment
  • Battery = 35–40% of car value: A single battery claim without insurance could cost Rs 1.5–2.5 lakh out of pocket, nearly half the car's price
  • City driving risk: As a pure city car, the Comet EV is exposed to higher frequency of minor bumps, parking scrapes, and low-speed impacts in daily use

MG Comet EV Insurance Coverage Details

Comprehensive MG Comet EV insurance covers the full electric drivetrain, body, and accessories, everything a city EV owner needs. Here is what each plan type covers for the Comet EV:

Coverage Area TP Only Comprehensive
Third-party bodily injury Unlimited Unlimited
Third-party property damage Up to Rs 7.5 lakh Up to Rs 7.5 lakh
Battery pack protection (17.3 kWh) Not covered Covered (accidental damage, fire, theft)
Electric motor cover (42 PS) Not covered Covered
Charging equipment (port, cable, home charger) Not covered Covered (add-on recommended)
Body panel and bumper damage Not covered Covered
10.25" touchscreen and electronics Not covered Covered
Regenerative braking system Not covered Covered
Theft and total loss Not covered Covered (up to IDV)
Natural disaster (flood, storm, earthquake) Not covered Covered
Fire and explosion Not covered Covered
Personal accident cover Rs 15 lakh (owner-driver) Rs 15 lakh (owner-driver)

For the Comet EV, comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended. The TP-only plan meets legal requirements under the Motor Vehicles Act but leaves the battery, motor, body, and electronics completely unprotected. Given the battery alone is worth Rs 1.5–2.5 lakh, comprehensive cover provides meaningful financial protection for a small additional premium of Rs 1,500–3,000 per year.

The Comet EV does not have ADAS or a Global NCAP safety rating. This means the car relies entirely on the driver for collision avoidance. In city traffic, minor accidents are common. Comprehensive insurance with zero depreciation ensures that even small claims are fully covered without depreciation deductions on parts.

Recommended Add-Ons for MG Comet EV

  • Zero depreciation cover: Ensures full claim payout without deductions for part depreciation. Critical for a city car that faces frequent minor scrapes. Costs Rs 800–1,500/yr.
  • Battery protection cover: Extended protection for the 17.3 kWh battery against electrical faults, water damage, and thermal events beyond standard coverage. Costs Rs 400–800/yr.
  • Charging equipment cover: Protects your home wall charger, portable cable, and charging adapter against surges, fire, and accidental damage. Costs Rs 300–600/yr.
  • Roadside assistance with EV towing: Flatbed towing to the nearest MG-authorised EV service centre if your Comet runs out of charge or faces a breakdown. Costs Rs 500–900/yr.
  • Return-to-invoice cover: Pays the full on-road price (not just IDV) in case of total loss or theft. Useful in the first 2–3 years when the gap between invoice and IDV is smallest.
  • Key replacement cover: The Comet EV's smart key fob costs Rs 5,000–8,000 to replace. This add-on covers loss or damage.

Key Factors That Affect Comet EV Insurance Premium

Your MG Comet EV insurance premium depends on several factors specific to this micro EV. Understanding these helps you optimise your coverage and find the best value. Here are the 7 key variables:

  • IDV (Rs 5–8 lakh): The Comet EV has the lowest IDV among all EVs sold in India. The base Pace variant IDV starts around Rs 5.5 lakh. The top Plush variant goes up to Rs 8 lakh. Higher IDV means higher own-damage premium.
  • Battery value: The 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery makes up 35–40% of the car's total value. This single component significantly influences the IDV and the own-damage calculation. As the battery ages, its contribution to IDV decreases.
  • City of registration: Metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore have higher premiums due to traffic density, parking risks, and higher claim frequency. The Comet EV is built for cities. So most owners register in metro RTO zones where premiums are 10–15% higher than Tier 2 cities.
  • NCB discount: Up to 50% discount on own-damage premium if you have a continuous claim-free history. NCB is transferable from any previous vehicle, including petrol or diesel cars. A 50% NCB on the Comet EV saves Rs 1,000–2,000 per year.
  • Add-ons selected: Zero depreciation, battery protection, and roadside assistance together add Rs 1,500–3,000 to the annual premium. These add-ons save thousands at claim time. On the Comet EV, the add-on costs are among the lowest for any EV.
  • Usage pattern, city-only car: The Comet EV has a 230 km range and is designed for daily city commutes of 30–50 km. This means higher exposure to parking and low-speed incidents but almost zero highway risk. Insurers factor this urban-only usage into premium calculations.
  • Vehicle age: New Comet EVs have the highest IDV. IDV depreciates by approximately 15% in the first year, 10% in the second year, and 7–8% per year after that. This naturally reduces the own-damage premium over time.
City Driving and Insurance Risk

The MG Comet EV is designed exclusively for city use. This means your car faces daily tight parking, bumper-to-bumper traffic, narrow lanes, and congested market areas. While the 4.06m turning radius and ultra-compact 3.4m body help avoid many accidents, minor scrapes and parking dents are common for city cars. Factor this into your add-on choices, zero depreciation pays for itself after just one minor bumper or panel claim.

MG Comet EV Insurance Cost

MG Comet EV insurance premiums start from just Rs 4,000 per year, the lowest among all EVs in India. No other electric car offers insurance this affordable. Here is a detailed breakdown by plan type:

Plan Type Estimated Annual Premium
Third-party only Rs 4,000 – Rs 5,000
Comprehensive (base variant, Pace) Rs 5,500 – Rs 6,500
Comprehensive (top variant, Plush) Rs 6,500 – Rs 8,000
Comprehensive + key add-ons Rs 7,500 – Rs 9,500

What affects your exact premium amount:

  • Variant choice: The Pace variant (Rs 6.99L ex-showroom) has the lowest premium. The Plush variant (Rs 9.40L) commands Rs 1,000–2,000 more per year due to the higher IDV and additional built-in accessories
  • NCB savings: A 50% NCB on a Rs 6,000 comprehensive policy saves Rs 1,500–2,000 on the own-damage portion alone. If you are switching from a claim-free petrol car, transfer your NCB
  • RTO zone: Metro RTOs (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai) charge 10–15% more than Tier 2/3 city RTOs like Jaipur, Lucknow, or Indore
  • Add-ons: Zero-dep adds ~Rs 800–1,500/yr. Battery protection adds ~Rs 400–800/yr. Charging equipment cover adds ~Rs 300–600/yr. All three together cost less than one minor repair claim
  • Voluntary deductible: Opting for a higher deductible (Rs 2,500–5,000) can reduce your premium by 5–10%. This works well if you are a careful driver who rarely claims

To put the Comet EV insurance cost in perspective: at Rs 5,500–8,000/yr for comprehensive cover, you are paying roughly Rs 15–22 per day to protect a car worth Rs 7–9 lakh. That is less than the cost of a cup of chai at most cafes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do Not Skip Battery Protection

The MG Comet EV battery is worth Rs 1.5–2.5 lakh, that is 35–40% of the entire car's value. Skipping battery protection on a comprehensive plan leaves you exposed to the single most expensive component on your car. The add-on costs just Rs 400–800 per year. Do not save Rs 500 and risk Rs 2 lakh out of pocket.

  • Choosing TP-only to save money: The Comet EV comprehensive premium is just Rs 1,500–3,000 more than TP-only. That small difference covers the battery, motor, body panels, touchscreen, and all accessories worth Rs 5–8 lakh. The savings from TP-only are not worth the risk.
  • Ignoring zero depreciation: City cars get parking scratches, bumper dents, and door dings regularly. Without zero-dep, you pay depreciation deductions on every single claim. On an affordable car like the Comet EV, the zero-dep add-on costs just Rs 800–1,500/yr, one bumper claim saves more than that.
  • Not transferring NCB: If you owned a petrol or diesel car before switching to the Comet EV, your NCB is fully transferable. A 50% NCB saves Rs 1,500–2,000 per year on own-damage premium. Many first-time EV buyers forget to transfer their existing NCB.
  • Skipping charging equipment cover: Your home wall charger and portable charging cable are not covered under the base comprehensive plan. A charging equipment add-on protects against electrical surges, fire, and accidental damage at home or public charging stations.
  • Letting the policy lapse: A gap in insurance means losing your accumulated NCB and driving illegally under the Motor Vehicles Act. Set a renewal reminder 15 days before expiry. At Rs 4,000–8,000/yr, the Comet EV is one of the cheapest cars in India to keep continuously insured.

Tips for MG Comet EV Owners

  • Always opt for comprehensive insurance: The premium gap between TP-only and comprehensive is tiny on the Comet EV, just Rs 1,500–3,000/yr. But the coverage difference is massive. Protect your battery, motor, touchscreen, and body panels. On the cheapest EV in India, comprehensive cover is a no-brainer.
  • Add zero depreciation from day one: City driving means frequent minor claims, parking scrapes, bumper rubs, door dings from adjacent cars. Zero-dep ensures full payout on parts without depreciation deductions. It typically pays for itself after just one bumper or panel repair claim.
  • Use the i-SMART app for safety and claims: The MG i-SMART connected car app tracks your vehicle in real-time, sets geo-fencing alerts, and provides remote diagnostics. Use it to monitor battery health, track vehicle location during theft claims, and share trip data with your insurer for faster claim processing.
  • Charge at trusted stations with surge protection: Electrical surges from unregulated or with variable surface conditions charging points can damage your battery and charging port. Stick to MG-certified charging stations, branded public chargers at malls, or install a proper home charger with surge protection and MCB.
  • Document your charging setup for claims: If you install a home wall-mounted charger, keep the purchase invoice and installation receipt. Your charging equipment add-on covers it only if you can prove ownership and installation cost. Take photos of the setup for reference.
  • Renew 15 days before expiry: At the lowest premium among EVs, there is absolutely no reason to let your Comet EV policy lapse. Early renewal protects your NCB discount, ensures continuous legal coverage, and avoids the hassle of a fresh vehicle inspection.

MG Comet EV Variants and City Driving Insurance Tips

The MG Comet EV is available in 4 variants, all powered by the same 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery and 42 PS electric motor with 230 km ARAI-certified range. The difference between variants is in features, interior trim, and price, which directly affects your IDV and insurance premium.

Variant Ex-Showroom Battery Est. IDV Insurance Indication
Pace Rs 6.99L 17.3 kWh Rs 5.5–6L Rs 5,500–6,500/yr
Play Rs 7.98L 17.3 kWh Rs 6–6.5L Rs 5,800–7,000/yr
Play SE Rs 8.58L 17.3 kWh Rs 6.5–7L Rs 6,000–7,200/yr
Plush Rs 9.40L 17.3 kWh Rs 7–8L Rs 6,500–8,000/yr

All 4 variants share the same battery, motor, and drivetrain. The premium difference is driven by the ex-showroom price gap and the additional features (touchscreen, connected tech, alloy wheels) that increase IDV. The Pace is the best value for insurance, lowest premium with the same core EV powertrain.

City Driving EV Insurance Tips

  • Tight parking = bumper damage risk: The Comet EV parks in the smallest spots in malls, offices, and residential areas. But tight spaces mean higher chance of bumper scrapes, door dings from adjacent cars, and minor panel dents. Zero depreciation is your best friend here, it ensures full payout on every minor claim.
  • Battery lifespan in hot Indian cities: Extreme summer heat (40°C+ in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, and Hyderabad) can stress the lithium-ion battery over time. While the 8yr/1.6L km warranty covers defects and capacity degradation, accidental thermal damage from external fires or electrical faults needs insurance cover.
  • Compact body panels are cheaper to repair: The Comet EV is just 3.4 metres long, shorter than a Maruti WagonR. Its small panels cost less to replace than standard hatchbacks, which keeps individual claim amounts lower and helps control future premium increases.
  • Charging at malls and offices: If you regularly charge at shared public stations in shopping malls or office basements, consider the charging equipment add-on. It covers your portable cable and adapter against accidental damage, theft, or electrical surges at public locations.
  • Affordable zero-dep makes sense for city scratches: On a Comet EV, the zero-dep add-on costs just Rs 800–1,500/yr. One minor bumper claim (Rs 5,000–10,000 repair cost) without zero-dep could mean Rs 1,500–3,000 in depreciation deductions alone. The math is clear, zero-dep pays for itself on the first claim.
The Gateway EV

The MG Comet EV is the gateway to electric mobility in India, the most affordable EV to buy and the cheapest EV to insure. If you are a first-time EV buyer looking for a smart, low-cost entry into electric driving with simple and affordable insurance, the Comet EV is the ideal starting point. Affordable car, affordable insurance, zero emissions, smart entry into electric mobility.

Extended Warranty vs Insurance for the MG Comet EV (2026)

A manufacturer warranty on the MG Comet EV covers manufacturing defects for a fixed period and kilometre limit. An extended warranty prolongs that same defect cover. It is sold by the manufacturer or the dealer, not by an insurer, and it does not replace motor insurance.

The two protect against different things and do not overlap:

  • An extended warranty pays when a covered part fails on its own, such as a gearbox, ECU or electrical component that stops working with no external cause.
  • Motor insurance pays for accident damage, theft, fire, flood and third-party liability. A warranty covers none of these.
  • Third-party cover stays compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 for as long as the MG Comet EV is on the road, whether or not it is still under warranty.
  • Both exclude wear and tear. Consumables, tyres, brake pads and routine service sit outside a warranty and outside an own-damage claim. On the insurance side a consumables add-on is what covers those items.

The exact term and kilometre limit differ by variant and by year of manufacture, so check the warranty booklet in your MG Comet EV document pack rather than relying on a general figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the starting premium for MG Comet EV car insurance?
The starting premium for MG Comet EV car insurance is approximately Rs 4,000 per year for a third-party plan. Comprehensive coverage ranges from Rs 5,500 to Rs 8,000 per year depending on the variant (Pace, Play, Play SE, or Plush), city of registration, and add-ons selected. This makes the Comet EV the cheapest EV to insure in India.
Does MG Comet EV insurance cover the battery pack?
Yes. The 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is covered under comprehensive insurance against accidental damage, fire, and theft. MG also provides an 8-year or 1.6 lakh km battery warranty for manufacturing defects and capacity degradation. Insurance handles accidental damage that the warranty does not cover. And the battery costs Rs 1.5–2.5 lakh to replace, which is 35–40% of the car's total value.
Is MG Comet EV the cheapest EV to insure in India?
Yes. The MG Comet EV has the lowest ex-showroom price among all EVs in India (from Rs 6.99 lakh), which gives it the lowest IDV and therefore the lowest own-damage premium in the electric car segment. The flat EV third-party rate of ~Rs 2,466/yr under the IRDAI slab for vehicles under Rs 30 lakh further keeps total insurance costs down.
Is there a separate add-on for charging station damage?
Yes. A charging equipment cover add-on protects your home wall charger, portable charging cable, and charging adapters against accidental damage, electrical surges, fire, and theft. This is especially useful if you charge at public stations in malls, offices, or shared residential parking where equipment is exposed to external risks. The add-on costs approximately Rs 300–600 per year.
How do I buy MG Comet EV insurance online?
Visit hizuno.com/car-insurance, enter your MG Comet EV registration number, select your variant (Pace, Play, Play SE, or Plush), compare third-party and comprehensive plans, add EV-specific covers like battery protection and zero depreciation, and pay online via UPI, net banking, or card. Your policy is issued instantly via email. The process takes under 5 minutes.
What is the IDV of an MG Comet EV?
The IDV of an MG Comet EV ranges from Rs 5.5 lakh (Pace variant, new car) to Rs 8 lakh (Plush variant, new car). IDV depreciates each year based on the vehicle's age, approximately 15% in the first year, 10% in the second, and 7–8% per year after that. The 17.3 kWh battery pack contributes 35–40% of the total IDV.
Can I transfer my NCB when switching Comet EV insurance?
Yes. Your NCB earned on any previous vehicle, including petrol, diesel, CNG, or another EV, can be transferred to your MG Comet EV policy. NCB discounts range from 20% (1 claim-free year) to 50% (5+ claim-free years) on the own-damage premium component. On the Comet EV, a 50% NCB saves Rs 1,000–2,000 per year.
Is zero depreciation worth it for MG Comet EV?
Absolutely. The Comet EV is a pure city car, it faces frequent minor bumps, parking scrapes, and door dings in daily driving. Without zero-dep, you bear depreciation deductions on every claim. The zero-dep add-on costs just Rs 800–1,500 per year on the Comet EV. One bumper repair claim alone (Rs 5,000–10,000 repair cost) can save you Rs 1,500–3,000 in depreciation deductions. It pays for itself on the very first claim.
