As of 2026, under current IRDAI norms.

The BYD Atto 2 is expected to launch in India around mid-2026 as BYD's most affordable electric vehicle for the Indian market. Built on BYD's proven e-Platform 3.0, the Atto 2 is anticipated to feature a 45.1 kWh Blade battery pack delivering approximately 400 km of range on a single charge. What Is Car Insurance for BYD Atto 2?

Car insurance for the BYD Atto 2 is a policy designed to financially protect your electric compact SUV against accidents, theft, fire, floods, and third-party damages. Every vehicle on Indian roads, including electric vehicles, must have at least a third-party insurance policy as mandated by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Since the Atto 2 is an electric vehicle, it falls under the IRDAI's EV-specific third-party premium category, which is typically lower than equivalent petrol or diesel vehicles.

Here is what BYD Atto 2-specific insurance is anticipated to cover:

  • Own-damage protection for your Atto 2's electric drivetrain, 45.1 kWh Blade battery pack, electric motor, body panels, and all mechanical and electrical components, with own-damage premiums anticipated between Rs 4,000 and Rs 10,000 per year depending on variant, city, and NCB
  • Third-party liability that covers injury or property damage you cause to others on the road, mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act and essential for all vehicles regardless of fuel type
  • IDV calculation based on the Atto 2's current market value including the battery pack, IDV for the Atto 2 is expected to range from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 16 lakh, and this decides your maximum claim payout
  • Battery pack protection, The 45.1 kWh Blade battery is the most valuable component of the Atto 2. Comprehensive cover protects it against accidental damage, fire, electrical surges, and water ingress beyond what BYD's battery warranty covers
  • Electric motor and controller cover, Protection for the electric motor, motor controller, inverter, and regenerative braking system against accidental damage
  • Charging equipment cover, Available as an add-on to protect your home charging unit (wall box charger) and portable charging cable against damage, theft, and electrical faults
  • Add-on covers like zero depreciation, battery protection, roadside assistance with EV-specific towing, and return-to-invoice, strongly recommended for a new electric vehicle where component replacement costs are higher than conventional cars

Since the BYD Atto 2 is expected to be positioned in the Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh price range, it falls in the medium-high insurance group. The higher IDV driven by the battery pack value means the own-damage premium is anticipated to be slightly higher than comparable petrol compact SUVs. However, IRDAI's reduced TP premium structure for electric vehicles helps balance the overall cost. With Zuno's network of 5,000+ network garages, claims processing for EV-specific repairs is expected to be smooth and easy.

Why Car Insurance for Your BYD Atto 2 Matters

Driving an electric vehicle without proper insurance is a financial risk you should not take, especially with the BYD Atto 2 where the battery pack alone could account for 30-40% of the vehicle's total value. The Atto 2's Blade battery technology is advanced and durable, but accidents and natural calamities do not discriminate between electric and petrol vehicles. Here is why every Atto 2 owner will need the right coverage:

  • Legal requirement, Driving without at least third-party insurance attracts a fine of Rs 2,000 and possible vehicle seizure under the Motor Vehicles Act. This applies equally to EVs
  • Battery replacement costs are significant, If the 45.1 kWh Blade battery pack is damaged beyond repair in an accident, replacement could cost Rs 4 lakh to Rs 7 lakh. Without comprehensive insurance, you bear this entire cost out of pocket
  • EV component repair costs are higher, Electric motor repairs, inverter replacements, and high-voltage wiring harness repairs are specialised and expensive. A motor controller replacement alone could cost Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000
  • Theft protection, As a new and desirable EV in an accessible price range, the Atto 2 could attract attention. Comprehensive cover pays the full IDV (Rs 10 lakh to Rs 16 lakh anticipated) if your Atto 2 is stolen
  • Natural disaster cover, Monsoon floods and waterlogging are a real concern for EVs in Indian cities. While the Blade battery is sealed and water-resistant, extreme water ingress can still damage electrical systems. Insurance covers flood damage repairs
  • Third-party liability, If your Atto 2 causes injury to someone, you could face claims of Rs 5 lakh or more. The mandatory TP cover protects you from these liabilities
  • Complete protection with new technology, The Atto 2 represents modern EV technology for the Indian market. Comprehensive insurance means you can enjoy the EV experience without worrying about unexpected repair costs
Did You Know?

BYD's Blade battery technology, which is expected to power the Atto 2, uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. This battery passed the rigorous nail penetration test without catching fire, a test that most lithium-ion batteries fail. While this makes the Atto 2 significantly safer in terms of battery fire risk, comprehensive insurance remains essential because the battery pack is the single most expensive component to replace after an accident. With 5,000+ network garages in Zuno's network, getting your Atto 2 repaired after any incident is anticipated to be quick and smooth.

The OD premium covers the entire vehicle including the Blade battery, electric motor, inverter, and all high-voltage components. Combined with the IRDAI's EV-friendly TP premium structure, you get full protection for your electric SUV. With 5,000+ network garages in Zuno's network, EV-specific claims are expected to be processed efficiently.

How to Buy Car Insurance for BYD Atto 2 Online

Buying insurance for your Atto 2 online is expected to take just a few minutes once the model launches. Follow these 5 simple steps:

  1. Visit hizuno.com/car-insurance, Enter your BYD Atto 2's registration number or select the vehicle manually if buying a new car. The system auto-fetches your vehicle details from the RTO database.
  2. Confirm your Atto 2 details, Verify your variant, confirm the electric fuel type, battery capacity (45.1 kWh), year of registration, and current NCB percentage if renewing.
  3. Compare insurance plans, Review third-party, comprehensive, and own-damage only plans with premiums displayed side by side. Check the IDV amount which includes the battery pack value.
  4. Choose your EV add-on covers, Pick EV-specific add-ons that suit your needs. Battery protection cover, zero depreciation, and charging equipment cover are strongly recommended for new EV owners.
  5. Pay online and get your policy, Complete payment via UPI, net banking, or card. Your BYD Atto 2 insurance policy document is emailed to you within minutes.

Key Factors That Affect Your Atto 2's Insurance Premium

Your BYD Atto 2 insurance premium is not a fixed amount. Several factors will determine how much you pay each year:

  • Model variant and battery capacity, Higher-spec Atto 2 variants with additional features will have a higher ex-showroom price and IDV, leading to a higher premium
  • Battery pack value in IDV, The 45.1 kWh Blade battery is a major component of the Atto 2's total value. As batteries depreciate differently from conventional car parts, EV-specific IDV calculations may apply
  • City of registration, Atto 2s registered in metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore are anticipated to attract higher premiums due to traffic density and accident rates
  • NCB discount, Up to 50% discount on OD premium if you do not file claims for 5 consecutive years. This can save Rs 2,000-5,000 annually on an EV policy
  • EV-specific TP premium, IRDAI sets lower TP premiums for electric vehicles compared to equivalent petrol or diesel cars. This helps offset the higher OD premium driven by battery value
  • Add-on covers chosen, EV-specific add-ons like battery protection and charging equipment cover will add to your base premium but provide crucial protection
  • Voluntary deductible, Opting for a higher voluntary deductible (Rs 2,500 to Rs 15,000) lowers your premium. You pay this amount from your pocket during a claim
EV Insurance Tip

Electric vehicles like the BYD Atto 2 benefit from IRDAI's reduced TP premium structure for EVs. While the OD premium may be slightly higher than a petrol SUV in the same price bracket (due to battery pack value in IDV), the lower TP premium helps keep overall insurance costs competitive. Factor in zero fuel costs and lower maintenance, and the total cost of ownership for an insured Atto 2 is anticipated to be very attractive.

BYD Atto 2 Insurance Cost, Premium Estimates

Here are anticipated annual insurance premiums for the BYD Atto 2. These figures are estimates for a new car with no NCB in a metro city. Actual premiums will be confirmed after launch:

Atto 2 Variant (Expected) IDV Range OD Premium TP Premium Total Estimate
Standard Range Rs 10L – Rs 12L Rs 5,500 Rs 3,500 Rs 9,000
Mid Variant Rs 12L – Rs 14L Rs 6,800 Rs 3,500 Rs 10,300
Top Variant Rs 14L – Rs 16L Rs 8,200 Rs 3,500 Rs 11,700
Top Variant + Add-Ons Rs 14L – Rs 16L Rs 8,200 Rs 3,500 Rs 14,500 (with zero dep + battery cover)

Here is what will affect your actual premium amount:

  • Car age, Premiums are anticipated to decrease each year as the Atto 2's IDV depreciates. However, battery depreciation rates for EVs may differ from conventional vehicles
  • NCB discount, Claim-free years reduce your OD premium by 20% (1 year) up to 50% (5+ years)
  • EV add-on covers, Battery protection cover may add Rs 1,500-3,000 to your annual premium but covers the most expensive single component
  • Voluntary deductible, A Rs 5,000 voluntary deductible can reduce your OD premium by Rs 500-900

EV-Specific Add-On Covers for BYD Atto 2

Electric vehicles like the BYD Atto 2 have unique insurance needs that go beyond what conventional car add-ons offer. Here are the EV-specific add-on covers you should consider:

Add-On Cover What It Covers Estimated Cost Recommended For
Battery Protection Cover Accidental damage to the 45.1 kWh Blade battery beyond warranty scope, impact damage, water ingress, electrical surges Rs 1,500 – Rs 3,000/yr All Atto 2 owners (strongly recommended)
Zero Depreciation Full part value paid during claims, no depreciation deduction on EV components, body panels, or battery parts Rs 1,500 – Rs 2,500/yr New Atto 2 (0-3 years old)
Charging Equipment Cover Protection for home wall box charger and portable charging cable against damage, theft, and electrical faults Rs 500 – Rs 1,000/yr Owners with home charging setup
Roadside Assistance (EV) 24/7 towing to nearest charging station or service centre, on-spot minor repairs, flat tyre and lockout assistance Rs 500 – Rs 800/yr All Atto 2 owners, especially highway drivers
Return-to-Invoice Pays the full invoice value (not depreciated IDV) in case of total loss or theft, critical for new EVs Rs 800 – Rs 1,500/yr New Atto 2 (0-2 years old)
Personal Accident Cover (passengers) Covers medical expenses for passengers in case of an accident, Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per person Rs 300 – Rs 600/yr Families and daily commuters
Battery Protection Is a Must

The 45.1 kWh Blade battery in the BYD Atto 2 is expected to come with an 8-year manufacturer warranty. However, this warranty typically covers manufacturing defects only, not accidental damage from collisions, floods, or electrical surges. Battery protection add-on cover fills this gap, ensuring that even a severe impact that damages the battery pack does not leave you with a Rs 4 lakh to Rs 7 lakh repair bill. For an additional Rs 1,500-3,000 per year, this is one of the most valuable add-ons for any EV owner.

Common Mistakes EV Owners Make with Insurance

Mistake #1: Assuming Battery Warranty Replaces Insurance

Many first-time EV buyers assume that the manufacturer's battery warranty (typically 8 years) covers all battery-related incidents. In reality, battery warranties cover manufacturing defects and capacity degradation, not accidental damage from collisions, floods, or fire. If your Atto 2's Blade battery is damaged in an accident, the warranty will not pay for repairs. Only comprehensive insurance with battery protection add-on covers accidental battery damage.

Here are other common mistakes BYD Atto 2 owners should avoid:

  • Choosing only third-party cover, The OD premium for an Atto 2 is anticipated around Rs 5,500-8,200 per year. Saving this amount can cost you Rs 2 lakh or more if you have an accident involving the battery or electric drivetrain
  • Not checking EV-specific IDV, The IDV of an EV includes the battery pack value. Ensure your insurer calculates IDV correctly, an undervalued IDV means lower claim payouts when you need them most
  • Skipping battery protection add-on, The battery is 30-40% of your car's value. Spending Rs 1,500-3,000 per year to protect a Rs 4-7 lakh component is basic financial sense
  • Not using authorised EV service centres, EVs require specialised mechanics and diagnostic tools. Always use authorised BYD service centres or network garages equipped to handle electric vehicles
  • Letting your NCB lapse, A 50% NCB on an Atto 2 could save Rs 2,500-4,000 per year on your OD premium. You have a 90-day NCB-retention window after policy expiry to renew and retain your NCB
  • Not declaring home charger installation, If you install a home wall box charger and want it covered, you need to add charging equipment cover to your policy. An undeclared charger is not protected

Expert Tips to Save on Your BYD Atto 2 Insurance

Follow these proven tips to get the best insurance deal for your Atto 2:

  • Renew on time every year, Protect your NCB discount. A 50% NCB saves you Rs 2,500-4,000 on your OD premium. Set a calendar reminder
  • Compare EV plans online, Do not renew blindly. Check premiums at hizuno.com/car-insurance to compare plans side by side and pick the best value for your electric vehicle
  • Bundle battery protection with comprehensive, Adding battery protection to a comprehensive plan is cheaper than buying separate protection. This covers the single most expensive component of your Atto 2
  • Opt for a higher voluntary deductible, If you are a careful driver, choosing a Rs 5,000-7,500 deductible reduces your premium by Rs 500-900 without much risk
  • Install anti-theft devices, An ARAI-approved anti-theft device can earn you a 2.5% discount on your OD premium
  • Skip add-ons you do not need, If you do not have a home charger, skip the charging equipment cover. Choose add-ons based on your actual usage pattern
  • Transfer NCB from your previous car, If you are switching from a petrol or diesel car to the Atto 2, your existing NCB can be transferred to your new EV policy. This saves money from Year 1
  • use EV-friendly TP rates, IRDAI offers lower TP premiums for EVs. Make sure your insurer applies the correct EV category when calculating your premium

BYD Blade Battery, What It Means for Insurance

The BYD Atto 2 is anticipated to feature BYD's proprietary Blade battery technology, which has significant implications for insurance. Understanding the Blade battery helps you make smarter insurance decisions:

Blade Battery Feature Technical Detail Insurance Impact
Chemistry Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Lower fire risk than NMC batteries, potentially lower thermal event-related claims
Capacity 45.1 kWh Accounts for Rs 4L-7L of vehicle value, drives higher IDV and OD premium
Range ~400 km (expected) Fewer range-anxiety incidents, lower roadside assistance claims anticipated
Safety Passes nail penetration test Reduced risk of battery fire, could lead to favourable premium ratings over time
Warranty 8 years (expected) Warranty covers defects only, insurance covers accident damage the warranty does not
Lifespan 3,000+ charge cycles Longer battery life means IDV holds value better in early years

The Blade battery's LFP chemistry is inherently safer than the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries used in many other EVs. This could mean fewer battery fire incidents and potentially more competitive insurance premiums as insurers build claims data on BYD vehicles. However, the battery pack still represents the most expensive single component, making battery protection add-on cover a wise investment regardless of the technology's safety record.

Charging Infrastructure and Insurance Considerations

The BYD Atto 2's ~400 km range and DC fast charging capability make it practical for daily commutes and occasional highway trips. Here is how charging infrastructure intersects with your insurance decisions:

Home Charging

Most Atto 2 owners are expected to charge at home using a wall box charger (7 kW AC). If you install a home charger, consider adding charging equipment cover to your policy. This protects against electrical faults, physical damage, and theft of the charging unit, which can cost Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 to replace.

Public Charging

When using public DC fast chargers, your vehicle's battery is protected under the standard comprehensive policy. Any accidental damage that occurs while your Atto 2 is parked at a public charging station, including vandalism, theft, or collision damage, is covered under your comprehensive plan.

Roadside Assistance for EVs

Running out of charge on the highway is the EV equivalent of running out of fuel. EV-specific roadside assistance covers flatbed towing to the nearest charging station or BYD service centre, critical because EVs cannot simply be given a can of fuel by the roadside. With Zuno's 5,000+ network garages and growing EV service network, roadside assistance ensures you are never stranded.

The growing charging infrastructure in India (with over 12,000 public chargers anticipated by mid-2026) reduces range anxiety but does not eliminate the need for comprehensive insurance. Whether you charge at home, at work, or at a public station, your Atto 2 faces the same accident, theft, and natural disaster risks as any other vehicle on Indian roads.

Extended Warranty vs Insurance for the BYD Atto 2 (2026)

A manufacturer warranty on the BYD Atto 2 covers manufacturing defects for a fixed period and kilometre limit. An extended warranty prolongs that same defect cover. It is sold by the manufacturer or the dealer, not by an insurer, and it does not replace motor insurance.

The two protect against different things and do not overlap:

  • An extended warranty pays when a covered part fails on its own, such as a gearbox, ECU or electrical component that stops working with no external cause.
  • Motor insurance pays for accident damage, theft, fire, flood and third-party liability. A warranty covers none of these.
  • Third-party cover stays compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 for as long as the BYD Atto 2 is on the road, whether or not it is still under warranty.
  • Both exclude wear and tear. Consumables, tyres, brake pads and routine service sit outside a warranty and outside an own-damage claim. On the insurance side a consumables add-on is what covers those items.

The exact term and kilometre limit differ by variant and by year of manufacture, so check the warranty booklet in your BYD Atto 2 document pack rather than relying on a general figure.

When you factor in zero fuel expenses and lower maintenance costs, the total ownership cost of an insured Atto 2 is expected to be competitive.
Q6. How do I file a claim for my BYD Atto 2?
Inform your insurer within 24 hours of the incident. File an FIR if the damage involves theft or a third party. Take your Atto 2 to an authorised BYD service centre or a network garages equipped to handle EVs. Submit the claim form, photos of damage, and required documents.
