Car Insurance for Mahindra Thar ROXX, Premium, Coverage & Plans 2026
As of 2026, under current IRDAI norms.
What Is Mahindra Thar ROXX Car Insurance?
Mahindra Thar ROXX car insurance is a motor insurance policy designed to cover financial losses from accidents, theft, natural disasters, and third-party liabilities involving your 5-door Thar ROXX. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every vehicle on Indian roads must carry at least a valid third-party insurance policy. And this applies regardless of whether your Thar ROXX is a daily family commuter or a weekend adventure machine.
Here is what makes insuring a Mahindra Thar ROXX different from other SUVs:
- Both engine variants fall in the same TP premium slab, unlike the 3-door Thar where petrol and diesel fall in different slabs, the Thar ROXX uses a 2000cc engine for both fuel types. This places both in the IRDAI 1500cc+ slab at approximately Rs 5,323 per year for TP cover
- 5-star BNCAP safety rating is the highest in its class, the Thar ROXX scored a perfect 5 stars in BNCAP crash testing, with 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. This safety profile positively influences OD premium calculations
- Level 2 ADAS reduces accident probability, features like autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition actively prevent collisions. Fewer accidents mean a stronger claim-free record and higher NCB over time
- ADAS sensor replacement is expensive, the front-facing camera, radar unit, and related sensors can cost Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 to replace. A zero depreciation add-on ensures full payout without deduction for these high-tech components
- 5-door body means more panel area exposed to damage, the Thar ROXX has a longer wheelbase (2741mm) and larger body panels than the 3-door Thar. Each door panel costs Rs 10,000 to Rs 22,000, and the extended side profile increases exposure during parking scrapes and side impacts
- Premium pricing raises the IDV, with an ex-showroom range of Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 22.49 lakh, the Thar ROXX carries a significantly higher IDV than the 3-door Thar. This translates to higher OD premiums but also a larger payout in case of total loss or theft
Why Mahindra Thar ROXX Insurance Matters
The Thar ROXX bridges the gap between a rugged off-roader and a family SUV. This dual-purpose nature brings insurance-relevant risks from both worlds, off-road terrain damage and everyday urban driving hazards.
- Off-road capability means off-road risks, the Thar ROXX retains the Thar's body-on-frame chassis with 4x4 option, 650mm water wading depth, and high ground clearance. Rocky trails can damage underbody panels (Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 per incident), while water crossings risk hydrostatic engine lock (Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh repair). Comprehensive cover handles all terrain-related accidental damage
- ADAS components add expensive repair bills, the front camera module, radar sensor, and related wiring can cost Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 to replace after a frontal collision. Even a minor fender bender that would cost Rs 5,000 on a regular car can escalate to Rs 40,000 or more if ADAS sensors need recalibration or replacement. Zero depreciation cover is essential
- 5-star safety reduces injury severity but does not prevent all damage, the 6 airbags and reinforced structure protect occupants excellently, but the vehicle itself still sustains damage in collisions. The safety rating works in your favour for OD premium pricing, not damage prevention
- Higher resale value attracts theft risk, the Thar ROXX commands strong demand in the used car market with resale values of 65-70% after 3 years. This desirability increases theft probability. Comprehensive cover with IDV payout of Rs 11 lakh to Rs 20 lakh protects your financial investment
- Family usage pattern changes the claim profile, as a 5-seater family SUV, the Thar ROXX is likely to carry passengers (including children) more frequently than the adventure-focused 3-door Thar. Personal accident cover of Rs 15 lakh for the owner-driver is mandatory. Passenger cover add-ons become relevant for family protection
- Legal compliance is mandatory, driving without at least TP cover attracts a Rs 2,000 fine for the first offence under the Motor Vehicles Act. Repeat offences carry steeper penalties and potential vehicle seizure
- Longer body panels are costlier to repair, the 5-door Thar ROXX has a 295mm longer wheelbase than the 3-door variant. Individual body panels (fender, bonnet, doors, tailgate) cost Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 each. A moderate accident involving 2-3 panels easily crosses Rs 1.5 lakh in repair costs
The Mahindra Thar ROXX is the first body-on-frame off-roader in India to score 5 stars in BNCAP crash testing. Its Level 2 ADAS suite includes autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition. Studies show that AEB alone can reduce rear-end collisions by up to 40%. For insurance, this means potentially fewer claims over time, preserving your NCB discount. Combine the 5-star safety with ADAS, and the Thar ROXX presents one of the most favourable risk profiles among off-road SUVs in India.
Coverage Options with ADAS & Safety Features
When choosing car insurance for Mahindra Thar ROXX, the comparison between plan types matters even more given the vehicle's advanced safety technology and off-road capability:
| Feature | Third-Party Only | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party bodily injury | Covered (unlimited) | Covered (unlimited) |
| Third-party property damage | Covered (up to Rs 7.5 lakh) | Covered (up to Rs 7.5 lakh) |
| Own damage (road accident) | Not covered | Covered up to IDV |
| Own damage (off-road trail) | Not covered | Covered up to IDV (casual off-road use) |
| ADAS sensor damage/replacement | Not covered | Covered (camera, radar, calibration costs) |
| Engine damage (water wading) | Not covered | Covered with engine protection add-on |
| Underbody and skid plate damage | Not covered | Covered (rock hits, terrain damage) |

| Aftermarket modification cover | Not covered | Covered if declared and endorsed on policy |
| Estimated premium (2000cc) | Rs 8,000 – Rs 10,000/yr | Rs 10,000 – Rs 20,000/yr |
| Best for | Older vehicles (8+ years), minimal use | All Thar ROXX owners, essential for ADAS-equipped variants |
ADAS coverage note: If your Thar ROXX variant comes with Level 2 ADAS (AX3L and above), a zero depreciation add-on is highly recommended. ADAS sensors, including the front camera, radar module, and control unit, are expensive precision components. Without zero depreciation, the insurer deducts depreciation on these electronic parts during claim settlement, leaving you to pay the difference. With zero dep, you get the full replacement cost without any deduction.
How to Buy Mahindra Thar ROXX Insurance Online
Buying car insurance for Mahindra Thar ROXX online takes under 5 minutes. Follow these steps at hizuno.com:
- Enter your Thar ROXX registration number, visit hizuno.com/car-insurance and type your vehicle number. The system auto-fetches your variant (MX or AX series), fuel type (petrol or diesel), ADAS configuration, and RTO details
- Select your plan type, compare third-party and comprehensive plans side by side. Review coverage, premium, and deductibles. Both petrol and diesel Thar ROXX variants have the same TP premium since both are 2000cc engines
- Add recommended covers, choose add-ons like zero depreciation (critical for ADAS sensors), engine protection (for off-road water crossings), roadside assistance, return-to-invoice cover, and tyre protection based on your driving habits
- Apply discounts and declare modifications, claim your NCB discount if renewing (up to 50% off OD premium for 5 claim-free years). If you have added aftermarket accessories like roof racks, off-road bumpers, or snorkels, declare them to update your IDV
- Pay and download your policy instantly, complete payment via UPI, net banking, or card. Your Mahindra Thar ROXX insurance policy is issued instantly and sent to your registered email
Not all Thar ROXX variants come with the full ADAS suite. The MX1, MX3, and MX5 variants have basic safety features, while the AX3L, AX5L, and AX7L variants get Level 2 ADAS. Know your variant before choosing add-ons, zero depreciation is far more critical for ADAS-equipped models due to the high sensor replacement costs.
Key Factors That Affect Your Thar ROXX Premium
Your Mahindra Thar ROXX insurance premium is calculated based on several vehicle-specific and personal factors. Understanding these helps you optimise your coverage without overpaying.
- Engine capacity (2000cc) sets the TP base, both petrol and diesel Thar ROXX variants use a 2000cc engine, placing them firmly in the IRDAI 1500cc+ TP slab at approximately Rs 5,323 per year. This is a fixed cost regulated by IRDAI and does not change between insurers
- Variant and ex-showroom price determine IDV, the MX1 petrol starts at Rs 12.99 lakh while the top AX7L diesel reaches Rs 22.49 lakh. This price difference creates an IDV gap of Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10 lakh between base and top variants, directly impacting OD premium
- NCB discount saves up to 50%, every claim-free year adds to your NCB, 20% after year 1, rising to 50% after 5 consecutive claim-free years. On a Thar ROXX with Rs 8,000 OD premium, that is Rs 4,000 saved annually. The ADAS features actively help you maintain claim-free years
- City of registration (RTO zone), Metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai fall in Zone A with higher premiums (10-15% more) due to traffic density and higher accident rates. Tier 2-3 cities attract lower premiums
- Age of vehicle reduces IDV annually, the Thar ROXX depreciates approximately 15% in year 1, 20% by year 2, and around 30% by year 3. However, the Thar brand retains value better than most SUVs, expect 65-70% resale retention after 3 years
- Add-ons increase premium but improve payout, zero depreciation adds Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 per year but eliminates depreciation deduction on plastic parts, rubber, glass, and electronics (including ADAS sensors) during claims. Engine protection adds Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 for off-road water wading coverage
- Fuel type has minimal TP impact. Since both petrol and diesel Thar ROXX are 2000cc, they share the same TP slab. The only premium difference comes from the OD component, where the diesel variants have a higher ex-showroom price and consequently higher IDV
The Thar ROXX's ADAS features, particularly autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assist, actively prevent collisions that would otherwise result in insurance claims. Each claim-free year earns a higher NCB discount. Over 5 years, a Thar ROXX owner who benefits from ADAS accident prevention could save Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 in cumulative NCB discounts compared to making even one minor claim that resets the bonus to zero.
Mahindra Thar ROXX Insurance Cost by Variant
Insurance premiums for the Thar ROXX vary by variant, fuel type, and chosen add-ons. Here is a variant-wise breakdown for FY 2025-26 estimates:
| Variant | Fuel | Ex-Showroom (approx) | TP Premium | Comprehensive (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MX1 | Petrol | Rs 12.99L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 10,000 – Rs 12,500/yr |
| MX3 | Petrol | Rs 14.49L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 11,000 – Rs 13,500/yr |
| MX5 | Diesel | Rs 15.99L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 12,000 – Rs 15,000/yr |
| AX3L | Diesel | Rs 17.49L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 13,500 – Rs 16,500/yr |
| AX5L | Diesel | Rs 19.49L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 15,000 – Rs 18,000/yr |
| AX7L | Diesel | Rs 22.49L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 17,000 – Rs 20,000/yr |
| AX5L 4x4 | Diesel | Rs 20.49L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 16,000 – Rs 19,000/yr |
| AX7L 4x4 | Diesel | Rs 22.49L | ~Rs 5,323/yr | Rs 17,500 – Rs 20,000/yr |
Key premium observations:
- TP premium is identical across all variants. Since every Thar ROXX variant uses a 2000cc engine, the IRDAI-mandated TP premium is the same at approximately Rs 5,323 per year. The only variation comes from the OD component
- The AX7L costs Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000 more per year than the MX1, this difference is entirely from the higher IDV (driven by Rs 9.5 lakh ex-showroom price gap) and the additional ADAS components that increase the vehicle's replacement value
- 4x4 variants carry marginally higher premiums, the 4WD transfer case, locking differential, and additional drivetrain components add Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh to the IDV, which translates to Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 higher annual OD premium
- NCB can reduce these figures by up to 50%, a Thar ROXX AX7L owner with maximum NCB could pay as low as Rs 11,000 to Rs 13,000 per year for comprehensive cover including TP
Common Mistakes Thar ROXX Owners Make
Avoid these frequent insurance errors that Mahindra Thar ROXX owners commit, some are specific to ADAS-equipped vehicles:
Many Thar ROXX owners skip zero depreciation to save Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 per year. But when an ADAS sensor is damaged in a minor collision, the claim payout without zero dep can be 30-50% less than the actual replacement cost. A Rs 45,000 ADAS camera replacement could leave you paying Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 out of pocket. The add-on pays for itself with a single claim.
- Not declaring aftermarket modifications, Thar ROXX owners frequently add roof racks, LED light bars, off-road bumpers, and larger tyres. Undeclared modifications can lead to complete claim rejection if the insurer determines the modification contributed to the damage. Always get modifications endorsed on your policy
- Letting the policy lapse beyond 90 days, if your policy expires for more than 90 days, you lose your entire NCB discount (potentially 50% off OD). On a Thar ROXX, this could mean losing Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 in annual savings. The insurer may also require a vehicle inspection before re-issuing
- Choosing TP-only for a brand-new Thar ROXX, the Thar ROXX costs Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 22.49 lakh. A TP-only plan saves Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000 per year on premium but leaves you fully exposed to own-damage costs that can easily reach Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in a single incident
- Ignoring engine protection for off-road use, if you take your Thar ROXX off-road through water crossings, rivers, or flooded roads, the standard comprehensive policy does not cover engine damage from water ingress. The engine protection add-on costs just Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per year but covers repairs worth Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh
- Undervaluing IDV to reduce premium, some owners accept a lower IDV to save on premium. But in case of total loss or theft, the payout is limited to the declared IDV. On a Rs 20 lakh Thar ROXX, even a 10% IDV undervaluation means Rs 2 lakh less payout
- Not understanding ADAS recalibration costs, after windshield replacement or front-end repairs, ADAS sensors need professional recalibration (Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000). This cost is covered under comprehensive insurance but not under TP-only plans
Tips to Lower Your Mahindra Thar ROXX Insurance Premium
Smart strategies to reduce your Thar ROXX insurance cost without compromising on coverage quality:
- Protect your NCB aggressively, the ADAS features on AX3L and above variants actively prevent collisions. Let these safety systems work for you, avoid filing claims for minor scratches (under Rs 3,000) and preserve your NCB. A 50% NCB on the AX7L saves Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,500 per year
- Buy or renew online at hizuno.com, online purchase eliminates agent commission, which can reduce your premium by up to 10-15%. The entire process takes under 5 minutes with instant policy delivery
- Choose a higher voluntary deductible, opting for a Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 voluntary deductible can reduce your OD premium by 15-20%. If you are a careful driver with ADAS support, the probability of making small claims is already low
- Install approved anti-theft devices, IRDAI-approved anti-theft systems can earn a 2.5% to 5% discount on OD premium. The Thar ROXX already comes with an immobiliser, but an additional tracking device qualifies for extra savings
- Renew before expiry to retain NCB, set a reminder 15 days before your policy expiry. Renewing within the NCB-retention window (usually 90 days) preserves your NCB. Beyond 90 days, you restart from zero
- Compare plans instead of auto-renewing, your current insurer's renewal quote is not always the best. Use hizuno.com to compare multiple plans and find the most competitive premium for your Thar ROXX variant and profile
- Skip unnecessary add-ons based on your variant, if your Thar ROXX does not have ADAS (MX1, MX3, MX5), you can reconsider the priority of zero depreciation. But for AX3L and above with ADAS, zero dep remains essential
- Use the RTO zone to your advantage, if you have multiple registration options (home town vs metro city), registering in a Tier 2-3 city can save 10-15% on OD premium due to lower risk zone classification
Thar ROXX vs Thar, The 5-Door Premium Upgrade and Insurance Impact
The Mahindra Thar ROXX is not merely a 5-door version of the iconic 3-door Thar. It is a fundamentally different vehicle in terms of safety, technology, and intended use case. These differences directly impact insurance premiums, claim patterns, and long-term ownership costs.
Safety Rating: 5-Star vs 4-Star
The 3-door Thar carries a 4-star GNCAP safety rating with dual airbags, ABS, and EBD. The Thar ROXX upgraded this to a 5-star BNCAP rating with 6 airbags, electronic stability control, and a reinforced body structure. For insurance, the higher safety rating means:
- Lower injury severity in accidents, fewer bodily injury claims, which insurers track for risk pricing. The 6 airbags cover front, side, and curtain protection versus the 3-door Thar's 2 airbags
- Better occupant protection reduces personal accident claim costs, insurers consider crash performance data when calculating overall risk. Five-star rated vehicles generally see lower average claim amounts for injury-related components
- The BNCAP rating is India-specific, unlike the 3-door Thar's GNCAP rating (tested in international conditions), the ROXX's BNCAP rating reflects Indian crash scenarios and road conditions, making it more relevant for domestic insurance pricing
ADAS: Active Safety That Prevents Claims
The Thar ROXX's Level 2 ADAS is a game-changer for insurance economics. The 3-door Thar has no ADAS at all.
- Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) can prevent or reduce the severity of front-end collisions, the most common type of urban accident. This reduces claim frequency over the policy period
- Lane keep assist reduces the risk of side-swipe accidents and run-off-road incidents, particularly on highways and during long drives to adventure destinations
- Adaptive cruise control maintains safe following distance automatically, reducing rear-end collision probability on expressways
- The trade-off: higher repair costs, ADAS sensors (camera, radar, control unit) cost Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 to replace. This increases average claim severity when damage does occur. Zero depreciation add-on is critical to offset this cost during claims
Insurance Premium Comparison: 3-Door Thar vs Thar ROXX
| Parameter | Mahindra Thar (3-Door) | Mahindra Thar ROXX (5-Door) |
|---|---|---|
| Price range | Rs 11.35L – Rs 17.60L | Rs 12.99L – Rs 22.49L |
| Engine options | 1497cc petrol / 2184cc diesel | 2000cc petrol / 2000cc diesel |
| TP slab (petrol) | ~Rs 3,416/yr (1000-1500cc) | ~Rs 5,323/yr (1500cc+) |
| TP slab (diesel) | ~Rs 5,323/yr (1500cc+) | ~Rs 5,323/yr (1500cc+) |
| Safety rating | 4-star GNCAP | 5-star BNCAP |
| ADAS | None | Level 2 (AX3L and above) |
| Airbags | 2 | 6 |
| Comprehensive premium | Rs 9,000 – Rs 16,000/yr | Rs 10,000 – Rs 20,000/yr |
| Primary use case | Adventure / weekend off-road | Family SUV with off-road ability |
| Typical claim pattern | Higher off-road damage claims | Lower claim frequency (ADAS + family use) |
| Zero dep importance | Important (body panels + soft-top) | Essential (ADAS sensors + body panels) |
Family Use vs Adventure Use: How Driving Patterns Affect Insurance
The 3-door Thar is predominantly purchased as an adventure and lifestyle vehicle. Owners take it to Ladakh, Spiti, the Western Ghats, and desert dunes regularly. This adventure-heavy use pattern results in higher claim frequency for underbody damage, engine water ingress, and body panel damage from trail obstacles.
The Thar ROXX, with its 5 doors, larger cabin, and family-friendly features, attracts buyers who use it as a primary family vehicle, school runs, office commute, weekend getaways, and occasional off-road trips. This mixed-use pattern typically shows lower claim frequency compared to dedicated adventure vehicles, which works in your favour for maintaining NCB and keeping premiums low over multiple renewal cycles.
The Thar ROXX costs Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000 more per year to insure than the equivalent 3-door Thar variant. But the 5-star safety rating, ADAS-assisted accident prevention, and family-oriented driving patterns create a risk profile that is likely to result in fewer claims over time. Over a 5-year ownership period, the Thar ROXX owner who maintains a clean claim record (assisted by ADAS) can save Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 through NCB accumulation, potentially offsetting the higher base premium entirely.
Extended Warranty vs Insurance for the Mahindra Thar ROXX (2026)
A manufacturer warranty on the Mahindra Thar ROXX covers manufacturing defects for a fixed period and kilometre limit. An extended warranty prolongs that same defect cover. It is sold by the manufacturer or the dealer, not by an insurer, and it does not replace motor insurance.
The two protect against different things and do not overlap:
- An extended warranty pays when a covered part fails on its own, such as a gearbox, ECU or electrical component that stops working with no external cause.
- Motor insurance pays for accident damage, theft, fire, flood and third-party liability. A warranty covers none of these.
- Third-party cover stays compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 for as long as the Mahindra Thar ROXX is on the road, whether or not it is still under warranty.
- Both exclude wear and tear. Consumables, tyres, brake pads and routine service sit outside a warranty and outside an own-damage claim. On the insurance side a consumables add-on is what covers those items.
The exact term and kilometre limit differ by variant and by year of manufacture, so check the warranty booklet in your Mahindra Thar ROXX document pack rather than relying on a general figure.
