Car Insurance for BMW i4: Premium, Coverage and EV Plans for 2026

As of 2026, under current IRDAI norms.

The BMW i4 is an all-electric Gran Coupe that combines BMW's sport sedan DNA with zero-emission driving, priced between Rs 72.50 lakh and Rs 73.50 lakh (ex-showroom) and powered by a single electric motor producing 340 PS with an 83.9 kWh battery delivering up to 590 km of WLTP range. The battery pack alone costs Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh to replace, making battery protection add-on essential. BMW parts and authorised EV service labour rates run 4 to 6 times higher than mainstream cars, and the TP premium for electric vehicles is calculated by kW output rather than engine displacement. An agreed value policy with battery protection is the only sensible choice for protecting your BMW i4 investment. Car insurance for BMW i4 starts at approximately Rs 35,000 per year.

What Is BMW i4 Car Insurance?

BMW i4 car insurance is a motor insurance policy that covers financial losses from accidents, theft, natural disasters, and third-party liabilities involving your i4 electric Gran Coupe. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every vehicle on Indian roads, including electric cars, must carry at least a valid third-party insurance policy. A comprehensive plan with agreed value and battery protection is strongly recommended for luxury EVs.

Here is what makes insuring a BMW i4 different from both mainstream cars and conventional BMWs:

  • High-value battery pack, the 83.9 kWh lithium-ion battery is the single most expensive component, costing Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh to replace. A dedicated battery protection add-on is essential to cover damage from flooding, undercarriage impact, and electrical faults
  • EV-specific TP premium structure, electric vehicles are rated by kW output rather than engine displacement under IRDAI guidelines. The i4 eDrive40's 250 kW motor places it in a higher TP bracket
  • Agreed value policy recommended, standard IDV depreciation can undervalue a BMW i4 significantly. An agreed value policy locks in a mutually agreed insured amount that reflects the true market worth of your Rs 72.50 lakh to Rs 73.50 lakh electric sedan
  • Specialised EV repair requirements, BMW i4 repairs require EV-certified technicians, high-voltage safety protocols, and BMW-specific diagnostic equipment. Only authorised BMW service centres with EV training can handle battery, electric motor, and power electronics repairs
  • No traditional maintenance costs but unique risks, the i4 has no oil changes, no transmission fluid, and no exhaust system. But it faces unique risks: charging port damage, battery cell degradation from deep discharge, and regenerative braking system faults that require specialised diagnosis
  • Limited BMW EV service network, BMW operates approximately 30 EV-equipped service centres across India. Labour rates at these centres run Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500 per hour, and wait times for EV-specific parts can be longer than for conventional BMW models

Why BMW i4 Insurance Matters

The BMW i4 represents a significant investment starting at Rs 72.50 lakh. Driving this electric luxury sedan without proper insurance, especially without battery protection, is a financial risk that can cost you lakhs in a single incident. Here is why the right policy matters:

  • Legal requirement, Driving without at least TP cover attracts a Rs 2,000 fine for the first offence and Rs 4,000 for repeat violations. The TP premium for the i4 is calculated based on its 250 kW motor output under IRDAI EV-specific rates.
  • Battery replacement costs are enormous, The 83.9 kWh battery pack costs Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh to replace. Damage from flooding, speed breaker impact on the undercarriage, or electrical faults can destroy the battery. Without battery protection cover, you bear this cost entirely.
  • Electric motor repairs are expensive, The single rear-mounted electric motor (340 PS, 250 kW) costs Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh to repair at an authorised BMW centre. Comprehensive cover protects against accident-related motor damage.
  • Flooding risk in Indian monsoons, Water ingress into the battery pack during urban flooding is a major risk for EVs. Unlike a stalled conventional car, a flooded EV battery can suffer irreversible cell damage. Battery protection add-on covers this specific risk.
  • Third-party liability is unlimited, A single accident causing injury to another person can result in consumer redressal body-ordered compensation exceeding Rs 25 lakh. Third-party bodily injury cover under Indian motor insurance law is unlimited.
  • Protect your BMW warranty, BMW India provides an 8-year or 1,60,000 km battery warranty and a standard vehicle warranty. Repairs at non-authorised garages can void both warranties. Insurance claims through authorised BMW EV centres preserve your coverage.
  • High depreciation on luxury EV parts, Standard insurance applies depreciation of 30% to 50% on plastic, rubber, and fibre parts. On a BMW i4 where a single front bumper costs Rs 60,000 to Rs 90,000, depreciation deductions can be devastating. Zero depreciation add-on eliminates this loss.
Did You Know? BMW's EV Service Network in India

BMW operates approximately 30 authorised service centres with EV-certified technicians across India in major metros and select tier-1 cities. These centres have high-voltage safety equipment, BMW iDrive diagnostic tools, and trained personnel for battery pack servicing. Because this network is smaller than BMW's overall 50+ service centres, wait times for EV-specific repairs can be 20% to 30% longer. A comprehensive insurance policy with EV roadside assistance ensures your i4 is flatbed-towed to the nearest BMW EV centre, never tow an electric car with wheels on the ground, as this can damage the electric drivetrain.

Coverage Options: Third-Party vs Comprehensive

When choosing car insurance for BMW i4, comprehensive cover with agreed value and battery protection is the only recommended option. Here is a side-by-side comparison:

Feature Third-Party Only Comprehensive (Agreed Value + Battery)
Third-party bodily injury Covered (unlimited) Covered (unlimited)
Third-party property damage Covered (up to Rs 7.5 lakh) Covered (up to Rs 7.5 lakh)
Own damage (accident) Not covered Covered up to agreed value
Theft protection Not covered Covered up to agreed value
Fire and explosion Not covered Covered (includes thermal runaway risk)
Natural disasters Not covered Covered (flood, earthquake, storm)
Personal accident cover Rs 15 lakh (owner-driver) Rs 15 lakh (owner-driver)
Battery pack damage Not covered Covered under OD + battery protection add-on (83.9 kWh pack: Rs 12L–Rs 18L)
Electric motor damage Not covered Covered under OD (repair: Rs 2L–Rs 5L)
Charging port/cable Not covered Available as add-on (port repair: Rs 30,000–Rs 60,000)
Key replacement Not covered Available as add-on (BMW smart key: Rs 30,000–Rs 50,000)
Estimated premium Rs 15,000 – Rs 20,000/yr Rs 35,000 – Rs 55,000/yr
Best for Not recommended for BMW i4 All BMW i4 owners (strongly recommended)

Electric vehicle note: For a BMW i4, third-party-only insurance leaves you exposed to repair bills that can exceed Rs 15 lakh for battery damage alone. With EV-specific parts costing 4 to 6 times more than mainstream cars, labour rates of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500 per hour at authorised BMW EV centres, and a battery pack worth more than many entire cars, comprehensive cover with agreed value and battery protection is non-negotiable. Always ensure your policy covers repairs at authorised BMW service centres with EV-certified technicians and genuine BMW parts.

  4. Review and apply NCB, Verify your BMW i4's details, selected coverage, and final premium. Apply your NCB discount (20% to 50%) if you have a claim-free record from your current or previous insurer.
  5. Pay and receive instant policy, Complete payment using UPI, net banking, debit card, or credit card. Your BMW i4 insurance policy is generated instantly and sent to your registered email.

Key Factors That Affect Your BMW i4 Premium

Your BMW i4 insurance premium depends on several factors unique to luxury electric vehicles:

  • Agreed value vs standard IDV, An agreed value policy costs slightly more in premium but ensures a fair payout during total loss or theft. Standard IDV depreciation can undervalue your BMW i4 by Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh after just 3 years.
  • Battery pack value, The 83.9 kWh battery accounts for approximately 30% to 40% of the vehicle's total value. Insurers factor this high-value component into OD premium calculations. Battery protection add-on adds Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000/yr but covers the Rs 12 to Rs 18 lakh replacement cost.
  • kW-based TP premium, Unlike petrol or diesel cars rated by cc, EVs are rated by motor output in kW. The i4 eDrive40's 250 kW motor places it in a higher TP bracket than lower-powered EVs.
  • Registration city, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore have higher premiums due to greater traffic density, higher accident rates, and more expensive repair labour rates in metro areas. Cities with better charging infrastructure may have slightly lower risk profiles.
  • NCB history, A claim-free record earns you 20% (1 year) to 50% (5+ years) discount on OD premium. On a BMW i4 with OD of Rs 20,000+, a 50% NCB saves Rs 10,000+ annually.
  • Add-ons selected, A full EV add-on suite (battery protection, zero dep, charging cable cover, EV roadside assistance) can add Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000/yr but saves you lakhs during claims on expensive BMW EV components.
Pro Tip: Agreed Value vs Standard IDV for BMW i4

Standard IDV depreciates your BMW i4's insured value by 15% to 20% in the first year and 10% to 15% each subsequent year. For a BMW i4 bought at Rs 73.50 lakh, standard IDV after 3 years could drop to Rs 47 lakh, well below the actual market value of Rs 55 to Rs 58 lakh. An agreed value policy fixes your insured amount at the true market value, ensuring fair compensation if the worst happens. The extra premium of Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000/yr is negligible against a potential Rs 8 to Rs 11 lakh shortfall.

BMW i4 Insurance Cost (2026 Estimates)

Below is an estimated breakdown of BMW i4 insurance costs. Actuals vary by RTO location, NCB, and add-ons.

Variant Agreed Value (approx.) OD Premium TP Premium Total (approx.)
eDrive40 M Sport (New) Rs 68.00L Rs 22,000 Rs 13,000 Rs 35,000
eDrive40 M Sport (1 year old) Rs 60.00L Rs 19,500 Rs 13,000 Rs 32,500
eDrive40 M Sport (3 years old) Rs 50.00L Rs 16,500 Rs 13,000 Rs 29,500
With full EV add-on suite (New) Rs 68.00L Rs 22,000 Rs 13,000 Rs 45,000 – Rs 55,000

Note: Premiums shown are estimates for vehicles without add-ons (except last row). OD premiums exclude NCB discount. Actual rates vary by insurer, city, and policy terms. EV TP premium is based on kW output. Figures for FY 2025-26.

  • EV TP is kW-based, not cc-based, The i4's 250 kW motor attracts a TP premium of approximately Rs 13,000/yr under IRDAI EV-specific rate slabs, which differ from the conventional cc-based structure
  • Battery protection is a must-add, At Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000/yr, battery protection covers damage to the Rs 12 to Rs 18 lakh battery pack from flooding, undercarriage impact, deep discharge, and electrical faults
  • NCB cuts OD by up to 50%, A 5-year claim-free record on the i4 brings the OD from Rs 22,000 down to Rs 11,000, saving over Rs 10,000 annually
  • Full EV add-on suite adds Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000, Battery protection, zero dep, charging cable cover, and EV roadside assistance combined can save you Rs 15 lakh+ during a single major claim on the battery or electric motor

Common Mistakes BMW i4 Owners Make with Insurance

Warning: Do Not Skip Battery Protection on Your BMW i4

The single biggest mistake BMW i4 owners make is not adding battery protection cover. The 83.9 kWh battery pack costs Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh to replace. Standard comprehensive cover may not fully protect against all forms of battery damage, flooding, undercarriage impact from speed breakers, deep discharge damage, and certain electrical faults. Battery protection add-on costs just Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000/yr, a fraction of the potential replacement cost. BMW's 8-year battery warranty covers manufacturing defects only, not accidental damage.

Avoid these costly mistakes when insuring your BMW i4:

  • Using standard IDV instead of agreed value, Standard IDV depreciates your Rs 73 lakh i4 to Rs 47 lakh in just 3 years. In case of total loss or theft, you lose Rs 8 to Rs 11 lakh from your rightful claim. The small extra premium for agreed value is negligible compared to this gap.
  • Getting repairs at non-authorised garages, EV repairs require high-voltage safety training and BMW-specific diagnostic equipment. Non-authorised garages risk incorrect battery handling, voided warranty, and potential safety hazards. Always claim through authorised BMW EV service centres.
  • Allowing regular towing instead of flatbed, Never tow a BMW i4 with wheels on the ground. This can damage the electric drivetrain and regenerative braking system. Ensure your policy includes EV-specific roadside assistance with flatbed towing.
  • Letting the policy lapse, A gap in coverage means you lose your entire accumulated NCB (up to 50% discount on OD). On a BMW i4, that loss can be Rs 10,000+ per year. Set a renewal reminder 15 days before expiry.
  • Not declaring home charging installation, If you have installed a BMW Wallbox or third-party charger at home, declare it. Charging equipment damage and any resulting property damage should be factored into your insurance planning.

Tips to Lower Your BMW i4 Insurance Premium

Smart choices can reduce your BMW i4 insurance cost without sacrificing coverage quality:

  • Maintain your NCB diligently, Avoid filing claims for minor scratches under Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. On a BMW i4 with OD of Rs 22,000, a 50% NCB saves Rs 11,000 per year. The maths strongly favours paying small repairs out of pocket.
  • Install IRDAI-approved anti-theft devices, A certified anti-theft system earns you an additional 2.5% discount on OD premium. The BMW i4 already has factory-fitted immobiliser and BMW ConnectedDrive tracking, but adding a VTS can strengthen your case.
  • Opt for a voluntary deductible, Choosing a Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 voluntary deductible can reduce your annual premium by Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000. This works well for careful drivers with low claim history.
  • Renew before expiry, Timely renewal preserves your NCB and avoids costly vehicle inspection requirements. A lapse of more than 90 days means starting fresh with zero NCB.
  • Buy online at hizuno.com, Online purchases eliminate agent commissions and intermediary costs. Direct digital buying typically offers lower premiums than offline channels for identical coverage.
  • Bundle only essential EV add-ons, A new i4 needs battery protection, zero dep, and EV roadside assistance as non-negotiable add-ons. An older i4 (beyond battery warranty) may need enhanced battery protection. Tailor add-ons to your car's age, usage, and charging habits.

BMW i4 Electric Sedan Insurance Guide

The BMW i4 is a fully electric Gran Coupe, it has no internal combustion components whatsoever. This fundamentally changes insurance requirements compared to conventional BMWs. Understanding these EV-specific differences ensures you choose the right coverage and add-ons.

Battery Insurance vs Traditional Coverage

The most critical difference between insuring a BMW i4 and a conventional BMW is the battery pack. Here is how traditional own-damage cover compares with EV-specific battery protection:

Risk Scenario Standard OD Cover Battery Protection Add-On
Accident damage to battery Covered Covered (enhanced)
Flooding/water ingress Partial (may exclude internal cell damage) Fully covered
Undercarriage impact (speed breakers) May be disputed Covered
Deep discharge damage Not covered Covered
Electrical fault in BMS Varies by insurer Covered
Thermal runaway event Covered under fire Covered (enhanced investigation support)

EV-Specific Add-Ons for the BMW i4

  • Battery protection cover, Covers damage to the 83.9 kWh battery from flooding, undercarriage impact, deep discharge, and electrical faults. Cost: Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000/yr. Covers a component worth Rs 12 to Rs 18 lakh.
  • Charging cable and equipment cover, Covers damage to or theft of the BMW-supplied charging cable (Type 2, worth Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000) and portable EVSE. Also covers damage caused by voltage surges during public charging.
  • EV roadside assistance, Provides flatbed towing (never wheel-on-ground) to the nearest BMW EV-equipped service centre. Includes emergency mobile charging and on-site diagnostic support. Standard roadside assistance may not have EV-trained personnel or flatbed availability.
  • Zero depreciation cover, Eliminates depreciation deductions on plastic, rubber, and fibre parts during claims. On a BMW i4 where the front bumper costs Rs 60,000 to Rs 90,000 and the rear bumper costs Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000, zero dep saves lakhs over the policy term.
  • Return-to-invoice cover, In case of total loss or theft, pays the full invoice value (Rs 72.50 to Rs 73.50 lakh) instead of the depreciated amount. Critical for a high-value EV that depreciates quickly on paper but holds real-world value.

BMW 8-Year Battery Warranty vs Insurance

BMW provides an 8-year or 1,60,000 km battery warranty on the i4. Here is what it covers and what it does not:

BMW Battery Warranty vs Insurance Battery Protection

BMW warranty covers: Manufacturing defects, capacity degradation below 70%, faulty battery management system (BMS) components, cell failure due to production issues.
BMW warranty does NOT cover: Accidental damage, flood damage, undercarriage impact, damage from improper charging, deep discharge from extended storage, collision damage, or fire damage from external causes.
Insurance battery protection covers: Everything the warranty excludes, accidental damage, flooding, impact, electrical faults from external causes. Together, the BMW warranty and insurance battery protection provide complete 360-degree battery coverage.

Agreed Value vs Standard IDV Over Time

Vehicle Age Standard IDV (approx.) Agreed Value (approx.) Difference
New (Year 1) Rs 62.00L Rs 68.00L Rs 6.00L more with agreed value
Year 2 Rs 52.70L Rs 60.00L Rs 7.30L more with agreed value
Year 3 Rs 44.80L Rs 53.00L Rs 8.20L more with agreed value
Year 5 Rs 34.10L Rs 43.00L Rs 8.90L more with agreed value

The gap between standard IDV and actual market value widens each year. A 5-year-old BMW i4 with healthy battery still commands Rs 40 to Rs 44 lakh in the pre-owned market, but standard IDV values it at just Rs 34 lakh. The battery's condition plays a major role in EV resale value, a well-maintained i4 with 85%+ battery health holds value better than depreciation schedules suggest. An agreed value policy bridges this gap.

Extended Warranty vs Insurance for the BMW i4 (2026)

A manufacturer warranty on the BMW i4 covers manufacturing defects for a fixed period and kilometre limit. An extended warranty prolongs that same defect cover. It is sold by the manufacturer or the dealer, not by an insurer, and it does not replace motor insurance.

The two protect against different things and do not overlap:

  • An extended warranty pays when a covered part fails on its own, such as a gearbox, ECU or electrical component that stops working with no external cause.
  • Motor insurance pays for accident damage, theft, fire, flood and third-party liability. A warranty covers none of these.
  • Third-party cover stays compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 for as long as the BMW i4 is on the road, whether or not it is still under warranty.
  • Both exclude wear and tear. Consumables, tyres, brake pads and routine service sit outside a warranty and outside an own-damage claim. On the insurance side a consumables add-on is what covers those items.

The exact term and kilometre limit differ by variant and by year of manufacture, so check the warranty booklet in your BMW i4 document pack rather than relying on a general figure.
