How to Make a Claim Against Your Home Insurance Policy

Disaster can strike at any time. A flood or theft could wreck your home and leave you feeling vulnerable. Having a home insurance policy could help you deal with the financial fallout of these events. But, making a claim against your home insurance policy isn’t as easy as a cashless car insurance claim. The process relies on a lot of paperwork, which could take some time. But, you don’t have to worry. We’re here to help out. Here’s a look at our guide that simplifies the home insurance claims process:

Step 1: Keep Your Documents Safely

Let’s start at the beginning. Your home insurance policy will likely also cover your valuables against theft. So, every time you purchase something for your home, make sure you keep the invoice safely. Ideally, you should file all your bills carefully with a copy of your policy. It’s a good idea to keep a soft copy of all the documents as well. If the file were to get damaged, at least you’ll have all the copies you require to make a claim. Take some time out every year to create an inventory list of the possessions in your home. Check what your policy will cover and what it won’t, and click pictures of everything. They’ll come in handy when you need to show proof of damage.

Step 2: Check Your Policy Documents

Once it’s safe for you to get into your home, the first thing you have to do is check your policy documents. Double-check the inclusions and exclusions. If you make a claim for something that your home insurance policy doesn’t cover, you could end up delaying the process. Make sure you file a claim only against damages that are covered. Typically, a home insurance company will protect your property against natural disasters, riots, fires and a few man-made perils.

Step 3: Fill Up The Claim Form

Once you’re sure your policy will cover all the damages, you need to inform us that you’d like to make a claim. You can fill up the online form or call our toll free number 1800 12000 or our paid landline number +91 22 4231 0000. If you like, you can send an e-mail with scanned copies of your documents to support@edelweissinsurance.com. You’ll also have to send hard copies of your original bills to our Claims Desk. Once we receive this, we’ll get the ball rolling.

Step 4: Wait For A Surveyor

We’ll have an engineer and surveyor come over to assess the damage. Depending on the amount of damage done and the policy you’ve picked, you can get a market value claim or a reinstatement value claim. The first option will help cover the repairs up to the estimated market value of your home at that point. On the other hand, the second option will help reimburse you for the amount you spend on the reconstruction or repairs, as long as you keep all the bills for this work.

    Step 5: Get Your Claim

Once we have all the information and paperwork we need, our team will work on your claim. We will send you regular updates and should be able to settle your claim within a month from the time all the paperwork is received.

Many people assume that getting a settlement from their home insurance company requires a lot of hard work. Honestly, it just needs some paperwork and organisation. If you have all your bills and policy documents at hand, filing a claim against your home insurance policy is a breeze.
