DigiLocker: Document storage online made simple!
When we were growing up, document management was quite a process, remember? Whenever we got an important document, the original was instantly laminated and stored away under lock and key. And enough photocopies were made to submit wherever required. In 2022, fortunately, there's no need for all those hassles. You can just get the original document from the provider and store it in your DigiLocker in the digital format, accessible at a click whenever you need it. Thus, enabling safe online document storage
What Is DigiLocker?
Basically, it's a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) under the Digital India program. In the Ministry's words, DigiLocker aims at ‘Digital Empowerment of citizens by providing access to authentic digital documents in their digital document wallets'.
The issued documents in the DigiLocker system are considered as good to use as the original physical documents, as per Rule 9A of the Information Technology Rules, 2016, which were notified on February 8, 2017. Most Government agencies, insurance companies, banks, hospitals, educational institutes and others are now part of the DigiLocker ecosystem, making life really easy.
Of course, it's important to note that only the digital documents fetched and stored in your DigiLocker are on par with originals. Digital copies stored in your mobile phone or Google Drive do not enjoy the same 'as good as original' status.
So how does one use DigiLocker? It's easy!
Download the app - Register yourself - Verify yourself for the type of document you need. Some of the documents available are the Aadhaar Card, Driving Licence, SSC Marksheet, Insurance Policies, etc. - Fetch the document(s) you need
Expert tip: Once you register for your DigilLocker, definitely fetch your Driving Licence, Vehicle Registration and Insurance Certificate. This will ensure that every time you need them, all the documents related to your vehicle can be found in one place.
There are about 1,654 issuers of documents available on DigiLocker, with over 92 million users having fetched 4.75 billion documents so far. It doesn't get more tried and tested than this!
So forget the photocopying and laminating, say hello to the new age, the DigiLocker way.
