White number plates are the most common and are used by private vehicle owners, featuring black lettering on a white background. Issued by the RTO to private citizens, these plates must follow the size, thickness, and spacing rules as per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). The benefits of this standardized format include easy identification as a private vehicle and improved readability and enforcement. However, there are limitations: these plates cannot be used for commercial purposes and must adhere strictly to RTO regulations.

Red plates with white lettering are temporary registration plates, typically provided by the dealership. These plates are issued for new vehicles until permanent registration is completed and are valid for a short period, usually one month. The benefits of these plates include allowing new vehicles to be driven legally until permanent registration is finalized and being easily identifiable as a temporary registration. However, they must be replaced with permanent plates within the stipulated time and are not allowed for extended use beyond the temporary period.
