You bumped your car into a pole while reversing. The dent looks almost hideable from your dad, and you thought, “I’ll report it later”. Now the repair bill is real, and one scary question pops up: can your insurer reject the claim because you reported the accident late?
Long answer short: Not always, but late reporting can make your claim more complicated.
What matters is how late you reported it, why you reported it late, whether the vehicle was repaired before inspection, and whether the insurer can still verify what actually happened.
Why reporting accidents on time matters
Claiming your insurance is a process. When an accident happens, the insurer usually needs to inspect the vehicle, assess the damage, verify the accident details and check whether the claim fits the policy terms.
You need to have these documents handy according to IRDAI’s motor insurance guidance:
- filled claim form
- vehicle RC copy
- estimate of loss
- repair invoice
- payment receipt.
So, can your claim be rejected for late reporting?
It can be rejected if the delay violates the terms of your car insurance policy or motor insurance policy, especially when the insurer cannot inspect the damage properly. However, if the reason for the delay is genuine, such as hospitalisation, lack of network in a remote area, medical emergency or delayed police documentation, the claim may still be considered.
A claim is stronger when the customer can show a clear timeline, a valid reason and supporting documents. That said, “I forgot” or “I was busy” may not work as smoothly.
10 steps to follow if you make a delayed claim
1. Inform the insurer at the earliest:
The safest rule is to inform your insurer immediately after the accident, even if you are unsure whether you want to make a claim.
A quick digital intimation keeps your options open. With insurers offering online claim journeys, reporting an incident is much easier than it used to be. Skip the long paperwork anymore.
2. Give a clear written explanation.
Do not simply say, “I could not inform earlier.” Explain why. Was the driver injured? Was the car stuck at the accident site? Were you waiting for an FIR? Was there a family emergency? A short, honest explanation is better than a vague one.
Your explanation should answer three basic questions:
- When the accident happened
- Why did the delay happen?
- When did you finally inform the insurer?
3. Do not repair the vehicle before inspection
This is one of the biggest mistakes policyholders make. If you get the car or bike repaired before the insurer’s surveyor inspects it, the insurer may not be able to confirm whether the claimed damage was caused by the accident. This can become a strong reason for rejection.
Emergency repairs may sometimes be unavoidable, especially if the vehicle is blocking traffic or is unsafe to move. In such cases,
- Take clear photos and videos.
- Keep repair bills, towing receipts and garage notes ready.
4. Take photos and videos immediately
Your phone can become your best claim-support tool. Capture:
- vehicle damage
- accident location
- number plates, road condition, and a third-party vehicle if involved
- surrounding signs or landmarks.
This is especially useful when the claim is reported late due to genuine reasons. Photos and videos can help show that the accident actually happened in the way you described.
5. Keep your explanation honest and detailed
Use a detailed explanation to make a delayed claim. You can say,
“I met with an accident on 7 July and was admitted to the hospital until 13 July. The vehicle was parked at the accident spot and later towed to the garage. I am submitting hospital papers, towing receipt and photos taken on the day of the accident.”
A detailed explanation sounds more credible because it gives the insurer something to verify.
6. File an FIR where required
For theft, major accidents, third-party injury, death or serious damage, police reporting is important. In some cases, an FIR or police complaint may be required for claim processing.
7. Check your policy wording
Every motor insurance policy has terms related to claim intimation. Some policies may use words like “immediately,” “forthwith”, or specify a time window. This does not mean your claim will always be rejected after that timeline, but it does mean the insurer can ask questions.
8. Avoid driving the damaged vehicle further
Do not drive a damaged vehicle. Further damage after the accident may not be treated as part of the original claim.
For instance, if the engine warning light is on after waterlogging and you still drive the car, the insurer may treat the resulting engine damage differently.
When in doubt, arrange towing and keep the receipt.
9. Do not hide facts to “make the claim stronger”
Clearly mention who, what, where and how. Inconsistent statements are more damaging than the delay itself. If your version changes between the claim form, surveyor conversation and garage statement, the insurer may suspect misrepresentation.
10. Preserve all documents
Keep these ready:
- Policy copy
- Driving license
- Registration certificate
- Photos and videos
- FIR or police complaint, if applicable
- Repair estimate
- Towing bill
- Medical papers, if the injury caused the delay
- Written explanation for late reporting
For a car insurance claim, documentation is not just “extra paperwork.” It is your proof trail.
What to do if your claim rejection feels unfair
If your claim is rejected only because of delayed intimation, and you had a valid reason, you can ask the insurer for a written rejection reason. Then you may raise a grievance with the insurer’s grievance redressal team.
If the issue is still unresolved, policyholders can use official escalation channels such as the Insurance Ombudsman or IRDAI’s policyholder support mechanisms.
Late reporting done right vs. wrong
Say Rohan’s car hits a divider at night. The repair cost is around ₹35,000.
Exhibit A: He gets the car repaired first, then informs the insurer after 20 days with no photos. The insurer struggles to verify the damage.
Exhibit B: He takes photos immediately, informs the insurer the next morning, gets the vehicle inspected and then repairs it.
