Stay Calm and Carry On: A Step-by-Step Guide to Dealing with an Accident
You could meet with an accident one day. At that time, understanding what you should and should not do can seem impossible. After an accident, you must react quickly to ensure everybody stays safe. Additionally, you need to inform your motor insurance company to file your claim request and get your payment or settlement. Thankfully, we’re here to help. Here’s what you need to remember right after a motor accident:
1. Get to safety
An accident can hurt you or those around you. After an accident, you must stop your car safely. You cannot leave the accident site even after a minor crash. If your vehicle is damaged and you think it may catch fire, get out of the car or off the bike and stand some distance away. If somebody is injured, call for an ambulance. As far as possible, try to stay calm. Do not get angry at yourself or any other driver involved. Focus on getting everybody to safety first.
Once you’re sure everybody is safe, you need to inform the nearest police station and your insurance company. You may have to file a First Information Report (FIR) that records the details of the vehicles and drivers involved. Your insurance company may ask for a copy of the FIR with your claim request. You must give your insurance company as many details as possible about the accident. If it’s safe for you to do so, take a few pictures of the damages.
3. File your claim request
Most insurance companies provide a limited time after an accident during which you need to file your claim. Typically, they allow seven days for you to apply for a claim. If you can, notify your insurance company and file your claim request within two or three days. If you miss this period, your claim can get rejected.
4. Follow up with insurance companies
After the accident, you may have to answer questions from your insurance company. If a third party was involved, you might have to speak to their insurance company as well. If you have filed a claim request but haven’t heard back, follow up with the company. Ask if you need to furnish any further documents. Your insurance company will send you updates about your claim request.
Dealing with an accident can be traumatic. You may need a little time to collect yourself before going through these steps. Most importantly, you must keep a calm mind to act and react appropriately. Make sure you keep a digital copy of your car insurance policy with you at all times. You can quickly inform them about the accident and get help as soon as possible.
