    How do electric car batteries work and what are they made of?

    A lithium-ion battery consists of an anode (negative electrode), a cathode (positive electrode), an electrolyte, and a separator. While driving, lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte, generating an electric current.

    The cathode is usually made of nickel, manganese, and cobalt. These metal oxides help store and release lithium ions while charging and discharging.

    c. Anode

    Generally, the anode is made with graphite, which effectively stores energy and enables efficient ion movement.

    d. Electrolyte

    The electrolyte solution can be like a liquid or gel. It facilitates the movement of lithium ions between the anode and cathode, making it crucial for the battery to operate.

    e. Separator

    The separator is a porous membrane that allows the lithium ions to pass through while preventing direct contact between the anode and cathode.

    f. Charging process

    Electricity from an external source causes the lithium ions to move from the cathode to the anode, which helps store energy for future use.

    How long does it take to charge an electric car?

    The charging time for an EV depends on the battery size, power source, and type of charger used.

    Level 1 charging (230 volts)

    It can take anywhere from eight to 20 hours to charge your EV while using a standard household outlet.

    Level 2 charging (415 volts - three-phase power)

    Home or public charging stations allow for Level 2 charging. It can take as little as four hours to charge your EV fully. However, cars with larger batteries can take up to 12 hours.

    DC fast charging (450 volts and higher)

    DC fast charging facilities are available at some public charging stations. They can charge your vehicle within 30 minutes or an hour.
