5 tips to ace your driving license test

Passing your driving license test is a rite of passage into adulthood. It grants you the freedom to navigate the roads independently. You no longer have to rely on your parents, older siblings or public transport – you can move around at your convenience. Before you hit the open road, you need to pass your driving license test. Thankfully, we’re here to help. Here’s our guide to mastering turning, parking, road safety signals and more, ensuring you pass with flying colours.

The journey begins with a learner’s license

Before getting your permanent license, you need a learner’s license. You must complete a learning driving license test to get your learner’s license. The test aims to evaluate your knowledge of traffic rules and road signs. Here’s how you can apply for your learner’s license:

    • Complete the driving license online application form
    • Submit the required identity and address proof
    • Visit the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) at the specified date and time
    • Complete the test

On passing the test, you receive your learner’s license. It is valid for six months. You can apply to upgrade your license to a permanent one after one month.

Documents required for the driving license test

You need to have the following documents to register for your test successfully:

    • Your Aadhaar card, passport, or voter’s ID card as age and identity proof
    • Your passport, Aashaar card, ration card, or utility bills as address proof
    • Your learner’s license to upgrade it to a permanent one
    • Passport-sized photographs

Skills to practise to ace your driving license test in India

Once you complete your paperwork and driving lessons, you can take the driving license test. Here are some tips to help you fly through it.

    1. Study the rules

The easiest way to get comfortable with the test is by getting familiar with the rules and expectations. Most often, the RTO examiner will test your ability to complete turns, accelerate and brake, and park properly. When you know what to expect, you can practise honing your skills to prepare.

    2. Stay calm

Try to stay calm on the day of the driving test. Nervous energy can cause you to trip up and make mistakes.

    3. Ace turns

Every driver must know how to complete turns smoothly. Use your indicators to signal your intention to turn. Then, check your side and rearview mirrors before moving. Finally, position your vehicle correctly to complete the intended turn.

    4. Park properly

You can practise different types of parking to master your skills and become a confident driver. While parallel parking, identify reference points on the parked vehicles to ease your judgement. Remember to align your rear bumper with the rear bumper of the vehicle directly in front of your chosen parking spot. Find cues on when to straighten your wheel, and remember to take your time while manoeuvring. When getting into perpendicular or angled parking spaces, remember to take adequate time to position your vehicle in the centre of the space. It helps you keep a comfortable distance between the cars on either side.

    5. Brush up on road safety signals

Revising your road safety signals can boost your confidence before the test. Recognising the various road signs, including one-way traffic, no parking, level crossing, narrow bridge, and give way, can help you feel confident behind the wheel.

Final requirement - Eye test for driving license

Before issuing your license, the RTO will ask you to complete an eye test. They will assess your vision to ensure you can safely operate a vehicle. Individuals who wear contacts or glasses must keep them on for the test. You may get the eye test waived if you have the required documentation from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist. Applicants who do not meet the required standards may have to visit an eye doctor to get their vision corrected before applying again. You may have to complete the eye test or get a certificate from a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist when renewing your license in the future.

Staying safe on the road with insurance

Following these tips can help you get your license and stay confident on the road. However, staying safe requires some additional support. Before you start driving, ensure your vehicle has the required insurance coverage. India made third-party coverage mandatory by the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. You can opt for a comprehensive plan to help with the cost of repairing your vehicle after an accident or incident. Customise your insurance policy based on your unique needs and requirements with add-ons that offer enhanced protection.
