We’re sure you once dreamt of growing up to be a superhero who could almost never get hurt and could help others. Well, the sad news is that getting hurt is something none of us can avoid. The good news is that by learning how to administer help and basic first aid, you can still help others when they’re hurt or in pain. Here’s a look at some important first aid information that can help you save lives.
1. Burns
If somebody has suffered from burns but doesn’t appear to have any neck or spinal injury, you need to move them away from the source of the heat. Use cool or lukewarm water on the burn to soothe the area. Do not use any kind of ice, cold water or any ointment or greasy substances such as butter or ghee. If you can, peel away any jewellery or fabric that is near the burn, but if you feel it’s stuck to the skin, leave it in place. While you wait for the ambulance to arrive, you can use a blanket to keep the victim warm (as long as the blanket doesn’t rub the affected area) or even cover the burn with a clean plastic bag or cling film to avoid it getting contaminated.
2. Basic Wounds
If a person near you has a visible wound that is bleeding lightly, use water to carefully clean the wound (as long as it isn’t bleeding heavily) and apply heavy pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding. If a large object is lodged in the wound, leave it there. You can bandage the rest of the wound while you wait for help to arrive.
3. Unconsciousness
Generally, somebody may feel nauseous or lightheaded before they faint. If you think somebody around you is about to faint, ask them to sit down and put their head between their knees or lie down so that their head is at a lower level than their legs. If somebody has already fainted, place something soft below their head and loosen any tight or restrictive clothing. If the person remains unconscious for more than a minute, you will have to place them in the recovery position, which means they are on their side, with one arm supporting their head and neck and the top leg bent, as if they were running.
4. Stroke
If you suspect that somebody around you is having a stroke, perform the FAST (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) test immediately to confirm your suspicions. You should then call an ambulance and talk to the individual to keep them calm and alert. At this time, it’s vital that you do not let them fall asleep.
First aid could help you save a life but, before you jump in, make sure you carefully assess the situation. Call 112 to get in touch with the authorities for support and only then administer the required first aid. Don’t forget to always keep a well-stocked first aid kit in your home and your office so that you have easy access to necessary supplies.
5. Heart Attacks
Heart attacks are especially scary to deal with, mostly because there’s nothing that can be done immediately. If the person is conscious and responsive, you can ask them to chew on an acetylsalicylic acid tablet, such as Ecosprin, to help minimise the damage to their heart.
