    • Conducting foreign currency exchange over the set limit.
    • Making payments using bank drafts, banker’s cheque, or pay orders above ₹50,000.

    These rules are designed by the Income Tax Department and mentioned in the Income Tax Act. So even if you have opened a basic savings account, you will eventually need a PAN card to conduct such activities.

    PAN card and Foreign citizens

    What about foreign citizens? If a foreigner wants to open a bank account in India, the rules are different.

    Foreign citizens need to provide a valid passport, visa details, and overseas address proof.

    If they plan to conduct financial transactions or invest in Indian markets, they also need a PAN card.

    The Income Tax Department issues PAN to foreign citizens who want to do business or open a bank account online in India.

    A Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) can also open a bank account. In such cases:
